[Photo: Cati Teague] As a native New Orleanian, Nedra Pezold Roberts passed her childhood and early adult life falling in love with her city and the area of southwest Louisiana, where her Cajun relatives have lived for hundreds of years. For the past several decades, she has lived and worked in Atlanta, where most of her writing, including two textbooks (one a critical anthology of plays), has been in the academic arena. More recently, she has been concentrating on crafting her own plays and novels. Roberts also serves on the board of the venerable Atlanta Writers Club, which celebrates its centennial in 2014. In addition to being a winner in the AACT's 2013 NewPlayFest competition, The Vanishing Point also won the 2013 Southern Playwrights Competition. Along the way, the play was a finalist in the 2011 National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, a winner in Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre's 2011ScriptFEST, a semifinalist (top 12) in the 2013 FutureFest at Dayton Playhouse, Dayton, Ohio, and a semifinalist (top 15) in the 2013 New Play Workshop at Raven Theatre, Chicago. Vanishing Point, The
How do you find your way home when the land, the culture and way of life, and even the relationships of your birth are vanishing all around you? That's the problem that haunts Pierre, an environmental engineer recently returned to Point Critique to head an experimental program designed to halt the loss of Louisiana's coastal wetlands. What he finds, in addition to a dangerously fragile ecosystem, is a brother (now engaged to Pierre's former girlfriend) determined to break free of the trap he sees as Cajun culture, and a father, Paul, still smarting from the pain of his broken relationship with Pierre. When Paul's shrimp boat sinks in a fiery wreck at sea, Pierre believes that replacing the vessel is the way to connect with his father and heal old wounds. But Paul wants more than a boat; he wants his son back. Gaining his lost son, however, won't prevent Paul from losing the other one.
