David Mitchell Robinson is most likely a playwright because growing up in the suburbs of the Twin Cities requires one to develop a surplus of isolation-intensive, indoor hobbies. So far, his goal to write a play about all of the places he's ever lived has resulted in Carapace (Minneapolis), Olympic Village (Atlanta), The Imaginary Music Critic Who Doesn't Exist (Chicago), and Terminals (airplanes). He currently lives in Washington, DC, where he is working on plays about Baltimore and Ohio. These and other plays have been produced, developed, or presented at the Alliance Theatre, Center Theatre Group, Primary Stages, B Street Theatre, the Kennedy Center, Rep Stage, Inkwell Theatre, Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre, Source DC, and Ohio University, where he received his MFA. He is the winner of both the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition and the Scott McPherson Playwriting Award, a two-time nominee for the PoNY Fellowship, and has been a finalist for the Jerome Fellowship, the Old Vic's TS Eliot Commission, the Clubbed Thumb Biennial Commission, and the Inkwell's development programs. He is currently working on a commission for Theater J. Carapace is available through Samuel French.

Carapace

Carapace
In Carapace, we settle into the passenger's seat alongside a drunk driver as he steers his way through the backstreets of his memory. Jeff, a Minneapolis sportscaster, hasn't spoken with his daughter Margo since his alcoholism demolished their relationship. When Jeff hears that the speech-impedimented Margo has stopped speaking, he decides to pay her a visit on her birthday. Determined to finally do the right thing for his daughter, Jeff steers his Oldsmobile through the Twin Cities, navigating past the recently collapsed 35W Bridge to deliver the one gift that has the power to get Margo to open up again.
