Captive Minds

Synopsis:
Discharged from a psychiatric hospital, Joseph, age 17, finds his adjustment at home complicated. His world remains cluttered with nightmares and fears of facing Carla, his long-time girlfriend. Add to that precarious balance a grandmother who joins the family allegedly to help out, but who instead questions the choice of the psychiatrist, the therapy, and the medications. Her religion teaches her that mental illness is the work of Satan; and she tells Joseph that his mind is Satans captive - a horror the boy internalizes with disastrous consequences. That setback, plus an imagined betrayal by the girlfriend, throw Joseph into a spiral toward relapse and hospitalization. Captive Minds reminds us that no mind exists as a blank slate. We, like Joseph, carry with us images, concepts and beliefs susceptible to the molding and shaping by others. Imagined or real, these so-called truths keep our minds captive and define our sanity.

Evening Star Rising

Synopsis:
Nineteen-year-old Kevin Landis sits on death row for a murder he did not commit. Or did he? Laura Enders, a graduate student in psychology is writing her doctorate dissertation on the characteristics of the young criminal mind. Her objective is to find behavioral markers for the early detection of criminalitya litmus test for sociopathy. She obtains permission from the prison warden to study Kevin. In an attempt to formulate an extensive psychological profile, she interviews Kevin in depth and over an extended period of time. She also takes statements from his girlfriend, his priest, his family, and his best friend. the story takes a ominous turn when Laura loses all professional objectivity and bonds emotionally with Kevin. Convinced of Kevins innocence, Laura sets out to win a new trial for him, and to write a book hoping to sway public opinion against the death penalty. Evening Star Rising avoids the hackneyed arguments pro and con of this politically sensitive issue. Instead, this story puts a human face on the condemned. the viewers are invited to draw their own conclusions about Kevin, whose proof of guilt, as Laura discovers, falls short of the legal standard for conviction: guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Kierkegaard's Gambit

Synopsis:
Maxwell Formsby, an evangelical minister, rejects his college-aged son Billy, following the discovery that Billy is gay. the story begins with the family together in a small Texas town at Christmastime. All are at home for the holidays, all except Billy. the sadness of loss grips the family; but so does anger, as the younger sons - Justin and Tim - take Billys side against their father. Sarah, the wife and mother, struggles to hold the family together. Maxwell remains steadfast in his belief that God requires his rejection of Billy. But his dilEmma is agonizing, for Billy is Maxwells favorite son. Drawing a parallel between the ancient story of Abraham and Isaac, Kierkegaards Gambit portrays a man torn between obedience to his God and the love of his son. This is a story of a family at war with itself - a story of love and hate and deliverance.

Losing Daniel

Synopsis:
Matthew Shelton, a famous American playwright, loses his 17-year-old son Daniel to death in a tragic accident. In an attempt to assuage his grief, he writes a play about him but consents to its production only if he can choose the actor who plays the young Daniel. Tommy, the chosen actor, bears an uncanny resemblance to the deceased Daniel, which rekindles Matthew's mourning for his lost son. Gradually, in Matthew's mind Tommy becomes Daniel with disastrous consequences. Nora, the wife, attempts to intercede, but Matthew turns a deaf ear. In a concluding climactic scene, Tommy reveals to Nora a truth about Matthew and Daniel that alters relationships forever. Losing Daniel is the story of a playwright who has devoted his life to the smoke and mirrors of the stage only to become entangled in his own blurred inner narrative.
