JM is a theatre-maker and arts educator, currently completing a practice-led PhD at the University of Reading, UK. His research areas include theoretical discourse around writing, text, audience and authorship in relation to theatre and performance. He is currently developing a site-specific interactive play, Rumi High, to take the form of what he names a "hyper(play)text." He is the founding artistic director of the Brooklyn-based theatre company, newFangled theatReR (www.newfangledtheatrer.org), for which he has written, directed and produced several new works, including Short Kutz & Forks, a TACK of an American Conscience andthe AmerikAn trip, tik. His production of Mac Wellman's Harm's Way won the FRIGID New York Audience Choice Award in 2007, and was subsequently co-produced with HorseTRADE Theatre for an extended run at UNDER St. Mark's. In 2009, JM received a Theatre Communications Group travel grant to collaborate with LOTOS Collective (UK) and Zoukak Theatre Company (Lebanon) to develop Triangulated City, Beirut's first ever live art piece, a multi-localed devised performance which had audience members traversing the city, to discover the three sites. He has since become a member of LOTOS (www.lotoscollective.org) and served as wordsmith on Trial of Mariner(Hoxton Hall) and Noah's Ark(I've) (Barbican Pit Lab Series). JM has worked as a teaching artist in over eighty public schools in New York City and surrounding areas. He has taught in primary, intermediate and high schools to various populations, including autistic and English language learners. He worked with Vital Theatre Company to form Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School, where served as Program Coordinator and Resident Teaching Artist (2007-11), having designed and developed a unique theatre arts integration curriculum. He was the Education Director of Women's Project (2008-11), promoting and developing a curriculum which integrated the work of female playwrights into the school curriculum. He has also taught for Lincoln Center Institute, Brooklyn Arts Council and Manhattan New Music Project. His recent performance work includes 'The S'kool of Edumacation,' a series of interactive solo performances, where the character of Mistuh JoMiRo challenges notions of learning, teaching and education by entangling audience members as 'students' trapped in a classroom motif riddled with inconsistencies, stereotypes and misinformation. JM is currently a Visiting Lecturer at University of Reading and University of Bedfordshire where he teaches such courses as Staging New Writing, Process to Production, Becoming a Creative Practitioner and Turning Points: People, Power, Theatre. He is committed to a daily writing practice that has taken the form of an extemporaneous journal titled Cranology, which dates back to 1997 and currently spans 61 marble notebooks.
