Mark Russell was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Somerset, England. He graduated from Liverpool Polytechnic in 1986 with a first in Drama and English and then completed a Masters in Theatre Studies at the University of Leeds with the help of a British Academy Award. After short spells lecturing in Theatre Arts at the University of Addis Ababa, and then working in journalism, he settled in Glasgow where he works as a teacher. He has had plays produced in Glasgow, Edinburgh and St Andrews, poems and prose published in various magazines and anthologies, including Tears in the Fence, Under the Radar, Molly Bloom, Shadowtrain, Otoliths, fourfold, Gutter, Poetry Salzburg Review, Cake (Lancaster), Bliss (Templar), The Frogmore Papers and Antiphon. He was also shortlisted for the 2012 Bridport Prize. Mark has an MLitt (Distinction) in Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow and completed a year-long St Mungos Mirrorball Clydebuilt poetry mentorship under Alexander Hutchison. His debut poetry pamphlet Pursued by Well-being is published by tall-lighthouse.
