Born 30 July 1912 in Birmingham, England to Leon and Joan Salberg. Leon Salberg had purchased The Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham in 1911, and Derek took over for his father in 1936. He was appointed an OBE in 1965 and a CBE in 1977. He died in 1997.
