Victorien Sardou was born of September 5th 1831 in Paris. His family had moved there after a severe winter had wiped out the olive trees on their estate. Sardou took numerous teaching jobs and wrote articles for encyclopaedias. He began to write plays and in 1854 his first work was produced "La Taverne des Etudaints" but was hurriedly taken off after riots. The theatre goers rioted because it was thought the French government had paid Sardou to insult students. By 1857 he was dying and living in abject poverty. However, one of the other tenants of the house was someone with theatrical connections -Mlle de Brecourt. She nursed him back to health and with her connections his play "Candide" was to be performed. Unfortunately the censor banned it. He went on to write for Sarah Bernhardt and Sir Henry Irving. One of his plays written for Bernhardt ""La Tosca" was made into an opera by Puccini. In the 1860s he caused great stir in spiritualist circles with his "automatic drawings" including dwelling places on the planet Jupiter. He died on November 8th 1908 from Pulmonary congestion

Notes: | Original Playwright - Victorien Sardou. Translated from Divorçons. Victorien Sardou, the most successful French playwright of his age (with collaborator emile de Najac); adapted from its original 1880 setting to 1921. Sardou's Cyprienne - witty, impatient, passionate, playful - has served as a star vehicle for actresses from Eleonore Duse to Uta Hagen.
Synopsis: | In a setting of upcoming Divorce Act amendments, Henri Des Prunelles suspects that his young wife Cyprienne has been flirting with his cousin Adhemar - and more. When confronted, Cyprienne justifies her actions as those of a young wife married to an older man - unlike him, she hasn't tasted the best of life yet and prefers the excitement of exotic spices over the regularity of wheat germ. A crafty Henri turns the situation around by agreeing to a divorce, whereupon the young cousin assumes a new, boring status of husband-to-be and Henri takes on the allure of forbidden fruit. The only way Henri can convince Cyprienne he doesn't have a lover himself, is to invite her to a romantic "divorce dinner" at his old bachelor bistro. Champagne, laughter, fine food and making sport of Adhemar rekindles their love and saves their marriage.
