I am an actress and playwright. I write and perform solo plays, often based on immigrant stories, using my own research and experience. I'm interested in the way historical events - cataclysmic events - impact personal lives. Sometimes I manage to write a non-solo play. Inspired originally by Anna Deveare Smith, my work falls into the category of Theatre of Testimony, and invites audiences to bear witness to the lives of people struggling to stay afloat in an uncertain world. Grants from the L.A. Dept. of Cultural Affairs, and the California Council for the Humanities have aided in the development of my work. I grew up in Brooklyn. My mother took me to the theatre and the ballet from the time I was five. My future was inevitable. My development follows a nonlinear progression from dancer to actor and writer and includes teaching, traveling, studying several languages and literatures. I've worked on and off-Broadway, in concerts, national tours and regional theatres. After moving to Los Angeles, I continued writing and performing as a solo artist and as a member of the L.A. theatre community. I also earned a Masters Degree in Literature at California State University, Northridge, where I continue to teach. As the daughter of refugees from Eastern Europe who shrouded their origins in an uneasy silence, I developed a voracious appetite for stories wherever I found them. Solo theatre seems a good fit for me, as it utilizes all my skills and interests and, I hope, allows me to best serve my subjects and my audience. Awards: Collaboration Award with director, Anita Khanzadian from Women in the Arts and Media Coalition for our work on Silent Witnesses. Best Documentary Script from United Solo Festival, 2014; other acting awards and grants from LA Dept. of Cultural Affairs, California Arts Council and California Council for the Humanities.
