Relative Comfort (with Poor Superman)
Synopsis:
Jackie Menton is a poet, not successful but talented. there are two big forces in her life: her continued infatuation for her ex-girlfriend Cat, and her boozing, which is starting to get serious. When the play opens, Jackie has snuck into Cat's backyard in the middle of the night with some new poems. She tries to talk Cat into showing them to her new girlfriend, Sally, whose Father is a publishing executive. Cat refuses and Jackie decides to befriend Sally as a way of connecting to her father. Sally finds the poems Jackie has left, really likes them, and shows them to her father. She does not know who the author is. When she discovers that they are lesbian love poems, she backs off. She is not out to her father, and in time the audience realises that he is equally not out to her. Jackie and Sally become cautious friends. Jackie knows Cat's major childhood secret; Sally has the relationship with Cat that Jackie wants. Jackie becomes a moral mentor throughout the second half of the play, both for Sally and for her father. the play explores the more positive outcomes of emotional pain and self-revelation.
