Oliver was born in Hertfordshire, and grew up there and in Belgium. He studied at York University (where his first translation, of Sartre's 'Dirty Hands', was performed) and then trained as an actor at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where his one-man version of Camus' 'L'Etranger' was completed. Since then he has completed seven more complete translations; his version of Giraudoux's 'The Madwoman of Chaillot' was shortlisted for the Gate prize in 2005, and a reading of a new translation of Maeterlinck's 'Interior' took place at The Union Theatre last November (2007) as part of the annual 'Terror' season there.

Death of Tintagel

Synopsis:
Tintagel has returned to the home of his sisters, called mysteriously by the evil Queen whom nobody has ever seen. They try their best to resist to fight against the forces of the night, but ultimately darkness triumphs and goodness is left sobbing against an enormous iron door with no lock.

Dirty Hands

Synopsis:
A naive but politically fervent young man becomes secretary to a left-wing politician in order to assassinate him. The politician's charisma, and the clarity and sense of his arguments, make the young man (and his wife) fall under his spell. In a Hamlet-style dilemma the young man, Hugo, wrestles with his moral sense - the main plot is seen in flashback structure - until he is finally able, against his better judgement, to pull the trigger. A taut psychological thriller with philosophical overtones.

Escorial

Synopsis:
The queen is dead, and while he mourns (or does he?) the king has no-one to blame. In a game of cat and mouse with his fool, he explores the nature of his power, which can only end, ultimately, with death of his subordinates. A playful short play, very guignol and Gothic, for two strong clown/actors.

Man Outside, A (L'Etranger)

Synopsis:
Meursault relates the story of his imprisonment and impending execution in Algeria. After his mother's funeral, about which he felt absolutely nothing, he goes to lunch with friends on the beach. He walks in the hot noonday sun and ends up shooting a man simply because of the heat. During the ensuing trial, his complete lack of remorse and guilt are what finally condemn him in the eyes of conventional morality. But he is able to find, in prison, a clarity he had searched in vain for elsewhere.

Mr Bob'le

Synopsis:
Mr. Bob'le is a curious guru indeed. He is surrounded by strange characters who are drawn by his normalcy, and after his sudden death in a foreign country he attains almost saint-like stature. Schehade writes, as in Lorca's comedies, of weird and wonderful characters in mundane situations - a topsy-turvying of the world of farce into a gentle and spiritual world of comedy.

Sister Beatrice

Synopsis:
The lovely and caring Beatrice runs away from the nunnery to follow her love; and the statue of her saint (who looks exactly like her) comes down from her pedestal to take her place. The nuns all believe that Beatrice is still with them and has lost the sacred statue, but as they are about to punish her severely for her misdemeanours with whips and scourges, she performs a miracle that makes them believe that she is blessed. When Beatrice returns years later, heartbroken and disillusioned - the statue returned to its pedestal - they find her doubly blessed, and she is left in confusion.

Voyage, The

Synopsis:
A young man, working in a haberdasher's in Bristol, has a dream of going to sea and seeing the world. The closest he manages to come in this play, is to impersonate an experienced sailor and navigator at a court-martial; and ends up far deeper in than he had bargained for. Journeys to South America are re-enacted in flashback, with all his friends and acquaintances playing the parts, until life and lies blend into a dreamlike tapestry. . .
