Jump
Synopsis:
Fusing physical theatre, storytelling and the urban movement discipline of parkour, JUMP has so far engaged over 1000 boys at Fife and Glasgow high schools in a series of workshops, training sessions and exercises, examining the fears and challenges faced in the transition from boyhood to manhood. JUMP introduces the boys to the core parkour values of critical thinking, self-discipline, determination, and teamwork, exploring the potential for this approach to be integrated into everyday life, equipping participants with the strength of mind, body and spirit required to overcome the physical, mental and emotional obstacles encountered in the process of initiation into the world of manhood. As the project progresses, JUMP will collect the boys' own stories and reflections on what it means to be a man', to be strong', gradually weaving a narrative into an evolving, large-scale, physical theatre event, styled around the urgent and fluid movement of parkour. Building towards a run of public performances in November, two theatre companies will be formed - one each in Fife and Glasgow and in addition to the development of physical performance Arts, participants will be introduced to a range of theatre-making skills, including music, lighting, sound and technical production. Having used elements of parkour in previous National theatre of Scotland Learn projects, JUMP places parkour very much at the heart of the programme, aiming to instil the values of self-improvement, inclusion and responsibility, for which the discipline is renowned - and to create some explosive theatre in the process.
