Synopsis:
In 1911, Michael Regan has taken over the grain shipping industry that is the backbone of a Great Lakes city. A bare-knuckled striver from the slums, Regan cornered a lucrative market by exploiting his workers, muscling out competition, and buying his way to social prominence. When a youthful idealist organizes a strike to fight back, the Boss threatens to bankrupt the entire town. But he has also set his sights on the conquest of a virtuous young socialite, and perhaps the only real hope lies in the unlikeliest place: the heart of a ruthless man who has also fallen in love. One-half melodrama, one-half social protest, The Boss is a confrontation of corporate power, individual generosity, community values, and even a newly globalizing economy--all from 100 years ago.
