Carol Shields was born Carol Warner in Oak Park, Illinois. She graduated from Hanover College in Indiana in 1957. In July 1957, she married a Canadian, Donald Shields, and emmigrated to Canada where she remained the rest of her life. Carol and Donald had five children, one son and four daughters. Ms. Shields started her literary career by publishing poetry and radio Drama. Her first novel, SMALL CEREMONIES, was published in 1976, and her last of eight novels, UNLESS, in 2002. Carol Shields is best known for her Pulitzer-Prize-winning book THE STONE DIARIES, 1995. Ms. Shields also wrote biography, short stories and plays. A compete biography and writing history for Carol Shields can be found at www.carol-shields.com. Ms. Shields died at home in Victoria, Canada in July 2003.
