Eileen Siedman Eileen Siedman passed away of natural causes on November 7, 2014, at the age of ninety. Born to Nathan and Rose Berg on March 22, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois, her early childhood was spent as a vaudeville performer with her brother Bobby. She graduated from Hyde Park High School, in 1942, and married Saul Siedman in 1943. In 1944, they moved to Los Angeles where they raised three children and started a school of dance and music called Theater Arts Workshop. In the early 1950's Eileen began a lifelong passion for politics, and community activism. She enrolled at East LA College, where she received an AA Degree, and then went on to Los Angeles State College where she received a B.A. and M.A. in Public Administration, and became a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society. Eileen's career in government began with the County of Los Angeles, and she then went on to work for the federal government, ultimately moving to Washington, D.C. where she became a member of the Senior Executive Service and rose to the position of Assistant Inspector General for the Department of Commerce. During her career she served as President and member of the Board of Directors of the American Society for Public Administration, and of the Federal Executive Institute. She retired in 1986, and returned to California where she bought a house in Mill Valley to be close to her children and grandchildren. Throughout her life she was at the forefront of progressive ideas, ranging from raising her children on natural foods to fighting for women's rights. She also enjoyed her house and garden, her cats Walter and Mitty, and listening to jazz. Her memberships in political and civic organizations are too numerous to list, but included the National Organization of Women, and the ACLU, from which she received the Benjamin Dreyfus Award for a lifetime of commitment and service. After retirement Eileen became a prolific author of plays, essays, short stories and novels, one of her favorite titles being "Grandma Was a Bureaucrat."- Published in Marin Independent Journal on Nov. 16, 2014
