David was born in Atlanta and has lived in Georgia, North Carolina, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, Florida and Minnesota. He studied at the Columbia University Creative Writing Center after a degree in English from Duke University. He is a member of the New Works Committee of the Minnesota Opera board of directors and currently has four libretti in development, two of which are adaptations of his plays. He is the father of five children and lives in Minneapolis.
