Sappho

Synopsis:
Austrian playwright Franz Grillparzer wrote Sappho in 1818, based on the Greek lyrist, Sappho whose poetry is still alive today. Grillparzer's tragedy tells the story of a love triangle where admiration and familiarity are mistaken for love. Sappho returns home from Olympia. In one hand she holds the laurel wreath of victory and in the other; Phaon, a young country boy to call her own. Phaon is not received as Sappho expected and true emotions soon reveal themselves. The characters ultimately are responsible for their own destruction.
