Prior to pursuing a full time career as a writer Somkin practiced medicine for ten years. He has written 8 full length and four one-act plays. Between the Rains, about the Brazilian environmentalist and labor leader Chico Mendes, won the White Bird Competition for plays with environmental themes and received a developmental grant from The Pilgrim Project, an organization that supports work with an ethical message; Darci's Report, an excerpt from the play, took Second Prize in a competition sponsored by "Grain," the Canadian literary magazine. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild and alumnus of the New Dramatists where he was a past president of the New Dramatists Alumni.

Adam's Mother

Synopsis:
The background story of Adam's Mother is the effort of an evangelical minister in a southern Ohio town to incorporate a textbook promoting Intelligent Design into the biology curriculum of the public high school. The Drama of Adam's Mother is the crisis of faith faced by Adam's mother, a member of the congregation led by the zealous minister, when she learns that one of her sons, Adam, is an unwitting accomplice to murder and her other son is involved in an abortion, the equivalent of murder in her book. Caught between love for her sons and a belief system that has no tolerance for life's ambiguities, she rises to the challenge.
