Playwright Aurin Squire is a New York playwright, producer and artist/activist. In 2014-2015, he has playwriting fellowships at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange, National Black Theatre and the Dramatists Guild of America. His plays include The Great Black Sambo Machine (Lincoln Centre Lab and Ars Nova), Defacing Michael Jackson (Nuyorican Poets Cafe workshop), To Whom It May Concern (Abingdon Theatre and ArcLight Theatre productions), African Americana (Theatre 503). Last year his drama Freefalling (Barrington Stages) won the Fiat Lux Prize from the New York Catholic Church as well as first prize in the InspiraTO Theatre International Play Festival in Toronto in Spring 2014. As a part of pro-democracy activism at Ensemble Free Theatre of Norway and Belarus Dream Theatre, his drama Article 119-1 premiered simultaneously around the world in various cities including Vancouver, Oslo, Los Angeles and Florence. Squire also writes and produces multimedia and web video including writing the installation art film Dreams of Freedom, which won three National Museum prizes and is in the permanent exhibit at the National Museum of American Jewish History.

African Americana

Synopsis:
Part of ObamAmerica: An Algerian prisoner is finally freed from Guantanamo Bay but what awaits him? An African-American university graduate campaigns for Obama in rough East Cleveland, Ohio but keeps getting stopped by armed and racist state troopers. A drone pilot in Arizona hides out in a nail bar. Edward Snowden chats to an Obama souvenir salesman in Washington DC. Bradley Manning dances in his jail cell. An ineffectual gun law is hotly debated on a TV news show. The voices of fourteen different playwrights are heard in ObamAmerica, the first theatre festival to focus purely on the effect this iconic American president has had on his country and on the world. ObamAmerica will give snapshots of the challenges that Barack Obama faces and the sometimes controversial choices he has made during his term of office. Playwrights include renowned TV and film writers Charles Evered (Adopt a Sailor starring Peter Coyote, USA's Monk) and Jacquelyn Reingold (NBC's Smash and Law and Order, HBO's In Treatment), many award winning playwrights from around the United States whose work has been seen at Primary Stages, Naked Angels, Manhattan Repertory Theater (NYC), Milwaukee Rep, Kennedy Center and New Jersey Rep as well as several American writers who have studied at the Royal Court Young Writers Programme and had work produced in London. Seven fifteen minute plays will be performed each evening for a week with seven different plays presented the following week.

Synopsis:
For a young Cuban couple (one dark-skinned and the other light skinned), the awaiting paradise of Miami turns out to be a living hell of racial strife, poverty and desperation. After the local police shoot and kill a young Black kid, tensions are ratcheted up even more by the hot-headed anti-Castro radicals and bitter Black leaders which destroy the young couple's hopes and promises for each other.

To Whom it May Concern addresses the effects of America's 'peace keeping mission' in Afghanistan as it focuses on the long-distance communication between a battle-scarred young marine stationed in Kabul and an emotionally out-of-control adolescent boy in Abilene, Kansas. the boy attracts the marine's attention by deciding to pretend that he is an 18-year-old female with a crush after having read an article about the soldier's heroic activities in a local paper. they begin a cyber-romance that is temporarily shattered when the marine decides to pay a visit to 'the girl' of his dreams.
