John Stanley was born in 1966 in Edmonton, North London, UK. He is a graduate of the Queen Mary University of London. In 2000 Stanley became a main script writer and storyline consultant on the channel 5 continuing drama Family Affairs. He remained a regular writer for the show until 2005. He is perhaps best known as the writer of Proud, a play written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Admiral Duncan bombing in Soho, London. The critical response to Proud was generally good. Paul Vale of The Stage wrote, "John Stanley's new play represents a sterling attempt to marry farcical comedy with weightier themes." QX Magazine criticised the play as "falling short of brilliant" due to its dual nature of being drama and comedy, however eventually concluding that, "...it makes a welcome change for a gay play to aim to inspire rather than depress! Judging by the moist eyes at the curtain call it certainly succeeds at that." RomoteGoat described it as a "clever farce", and gave it 4 stars.
