Synopsis:

In response to the riots of August 2011, Bernadette Russell committed to be kind to a stranger every single day for a year. This multi media show tells the heartbreaking, surprising and challenging stories of that year, which began with burning buildings and ended with the flame of the Olympic torch, against a global backdrop of social unrest and economic crisis. Part storytelling, part stand up, part live documentary, featuring a dinner party with surprise guests including the Dalai Lama, Aristotle and Princess Diana, this show attempts to answer the question: is it possible to change the world just by being kind

Synopsis:

the Anatomy of Melancholy has been described as the greatest book ever written. Nearly 400 years old, it is a vast, 1500 page attempt to identify the causes, symptoms and cures for all kinds of melancholy. Written by vicar and librarian Robert Burton it contains all the wisdom of its age arcane, outlandish and hilarious. Yet, amidst all the wild stories and suppositions, much of its advice remains as urgent and profound now as it did then. Ten years ago a Serbian festival director challenged Stans Cafe to adapt this, his favourite book, for the stage, stating that they were the only company he could imagine pulling it off. So this is their attempt to bring the Anatomy Of Melancholy, perhaps the worlds most extraordinary self-help manual, to the stage.

A sister (he misses), a woman (the chemist - his lover), a hotel he's sure he's already checked into, a plane he's destined never to catch, a briefing room where he's made to rehearse small talk, a doctor who sells a dangerous kind of health insurance, a necklace glinting in the moonlight. Something bad has happened, but a crumbling memory makes recall evasive. Be Proud of Me switches between slickly improvised banter and an hallucinatory text scripted from tourist phrase books, a dark thriller viewed from the warped perspective of a failing mind.

Synopsis:

A theatre show for three performers and a bingo machine. Although it aimed to carry its research lightly, bingo in the house of babel was inspired by a series of ideas provoked by popular science books which were in vogue around 1994. The show worked as a mind game around the Turing Test for artificial intelligence, which employed the notion of a book, in which could be looked up all the answers to all the questions you could ask anyone. It seemed clear that such a book would run not just to many volumes but to a significant library. So developed the question. . .What would the librarians do in the 'Tea or Coffee?' section of Einstein's brain library? Our answer was go mad, doubt their sanity, play games, set fire to the place. But not necessarily in that order.

Synopsis:

There were two versions of Canute the King. The first was performed for three nights around, on and under water at the beautiful Edwardian swimming baths on Moseley Road, Birmingham. The second toured in an inch of water. Like Memoirs of an Amnesiac before it, Canute the King was loosely based on an historical figure. The story / legend of Canute was appropriated for its metaphoric potential and fused with other figures. Aelthruda, Canute's wife, became an important foil in a piece which came to be about fate, duty, humanity, identity, sacrifice and loss. The biographies of Edward VIII, Princess Diana and Prince Charles all informed both productions. The pool version was primarily a visual spectacle. Journeys, around, over and under the water were accompanied by taped music, live classical singing, blues harmonica and slide projections. A pier made from wood found on the streets of Highgate and Balsall Heath jutted out from the deep end. A meal was eaten underwater. A flotilla of silver, candle lit boats were launched from a raft and, at the close, inevitably, Canute sank (or did the waters rise?). The scale and logistical complexity of the pool version was sharply contrasted by the simplicity of the second version. Stripped back to its thematic and narrative core the piece was completely remade for touring. Now a two hander, without live music, but still with projections and silver boats, the piece became flooded with text. It charted the royal couple's last night together huddled in the top tower room of a drowned palace. Extremely simple in its form, elegiac in its tone and content, Canute was a comic piece of theatrical poetry, beautiful and sad.

Synopsis:

Three Cardinals in crimson robes are on a mission of evAngelism. they are on tour with a puppet show they have made that sets out their abbreviated and extrapolated reading of the bible. the reading is abbreviated as it stages only a relatively small number of scenes key to their message of redemption; it is extrapolated as its reading of the book of Acts and Revelation include elements of contemporary history. Our theatre show is slightly bigger than the Cardinal's own puppet show our real audience (as opposed to their fictional audience), can see what is happening in the wings, how they collaborate and argue, how they are both aided by and in conflict with their young female Muslim stage manager. the Cardinals is essentially a visual show performed without words. the Cardinals have no puppets to speak of so enter the puppet stage themselves. the sincerity of the Cardinals, the seriousness of their intent and their theatrical naivete makes the show simultaniously very funny and strangely touching. the show has many themes with Belief chief amongst them. the Cardinals ask us to 'believe' whilst classically the theatre asks us to 'suspend our disbelief'. the show is in essence very simple, it tells well-known Bible stories in a simple, beautiful and compelling way. We have been asked if the show is 'controversial' which is an impossible question to answer definitively because we cannot answer for other people's personal instincts. We hope the show is provocative but not controversial. We are not seeking to argue for or against religion but hoping to prompt people to consider their relationship to religious faith. - Stan's cafe

Synopsis:

The Carrier Frequency, Impact Theatre's collaboration with the novelist Russell Hoban, was one of the Eighties' most outstanding and influential theatre shows. It is set in a post-nuclear world, where brutalised steel and concrete structures rise from a giant pool of water. It depicts six figures lost in an absurd and exhausting ritual, trying to revive a departed civilisation. Despite it's harrowing subject matter, the show retains moments of ludicrous slapstick and verbal wit. When it exploded on the world in 1984 it caused a sensation.

Synopsis:

Co-commissioned by Wiener Festwochen, the Cleansing of Constance Brown looks likely to enhance the company's international reputation even further. Performed in a long and narrow constructed corridor -a device that creates a startling sense of dynamism and intensity -the show is a poetic, episodic piece of visual theatre that explores ideas of power, the site of decision-making and the place of women in the world; and investigates the concept of 'cleansing' - be it a religious, psychic or medical imperative, a domestic chore, a personal ablution or a fragment of a genocide.

Security is in meltdown but for most residents life continues as normal. Using a large cast and inventive staging this playful and humane show creates a new world, much like our own, where connections are tenuous, no-one knows everything, fiction, rumour and fact are blurred and personal lives continue despite the thriller being played out next door.

an off site production by Birmingham Rep. the play is written And directed by James Yarker, with lyrics by Craig Stephens And music And origami by Brian Duffy.

Synopsis:

A play about the 2008 financial collapse, set in 17th Century Netherlands, looking like a Rembrandt, featuring origami and paying homage to the great theatre maker Bertolt Brecht.Tulips were imported into Europe in the early 17th Century at a time when merchants were generating wealth through trade. Collecting exotic items was a fashion. A passion developed for tulips, their price rose rapidly and created the possibility of making profit through speculative buying. For a brief time certain tulip bulbs were sold for prices equivalent to those of a house, or three years of a craftsmans wage. In 1637 this financial bubble burst. Using Tulipmania as its inspiration, the Just Price of Flowers finds the Van Leasings buying a tulip from Van Eek, using money borrowed from Van Hire. It follows them as they chase their dream of wealth through the growing complexities of futures trading, credit ratings, sub-primes, credit default swaps, and the horror of short selling. This is a simple, playful production, which explains the complexities of high finance with great humour, in a remarkably straightforward way, whilst steadily setting you up for the inevitable heartbreaking finale. there are also two songs and an origami peacock.

Eventually we returned to the subject of the obituary as a starting point for what, at some point, clearly had to become a musical, kind of. Set in a political rally it shows how a charismatic, newly elected president is consumed by ego and becomes a deranged dictator. The story develops in the course of a concert. The President's cabinet are a band, he is the lead singer and the audience are members of the ruling party. The show is funny, and playful with serious subject matter, the music is excellent.

Synopsis:

This is described on this Birmingham-based company's website as "the latest in a series of 'not quite theatre' shows that have brought Stan's Cafe international acclaim". Not quite theatre? I agree, for this is not an interaction between actor and performer but a piece where the audience member becomes performer, following a 'script' laid out as vinyl images placed on floor, walls and other surfaces to lead them on a journey theoretically enabling them to act out the incidents of the story. the concept is described as inspired by teach-yourself-to-dance floor mats and presumably you are intended to place your feet - and perhaps hands too - directly on the positions marked out by vinyl stickers.

Synopsis:

Inspired by teach-yourself-to-dance floor mats, Stan's Cafe invites YOU to perform this new play. Instructions for the performance are clearly printed out as vinyl footsteps and speech bubbles applied to Warwick Arts Centre's walls, floors, windows and doors. They spill out onto campus waiting for you to follow them. By choosing which colour footsteps to stand in you can cast yourself and your friends in the show, an action packed, clich celebrating thriller that re-imagines the University Campus as the secret Head Quarters of an evil genius. Everyone is welcome. Pick up a map from Box Office at any time; the show starts when you start. Come alone or with any number of friends. You can rehearse, repeat your favourite scenes, cut bits you're not happy with, maybe even go off script and improvise. Be your own audience. Have fun. Spy Steps is the latest in a series of not-quite-theatre shows that have gained Stan's Cafe, popular and critical acclaim around the world. Previous appearances at Warwick Arts Centre include The Cleansing of Constance Brown and the rice installation, Of All The People In All The World.

Synopsis:

Have you ever fallen in love someone in a film? It's easily done. When silent film first arrived in Japan, a narrator called a Benshi was employed to explain the movie and you would fall in love with them. They were the stars and they guided you through their interpretation of the screen images. Though once mighty and numerous, the dominance of the Benshi was short-lived. 'The talkies' eventually killed them off. But now the Benshi is back, in all his glory! Stan's Cafe have been to Tokyo with film-maker Oliver Clark and shot Shadows, a beautiful and mysterious silent movie about a young couple in love, all that remains is for the Benshi to tell us what every shot and symbol means, who the actors are, why he loves them, why the director is terrible, when and why we should cry and laugh, what will happen in the end, why he is the greatest, most indispensable Benshi in history and why we should fall in love with him. If only it was as simple as that. . .

Synopsis:

based on Gotterdammerung, the final part of Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle. Cheekily retitled Twilightofthefreakingods, Stan's Cafe's reinterpretation of Wagner's stirring epic - a battle between humans and Gods inspired by Norse mythology - is described by the company as "a large-scale theatrical experiment" as the story unfolds simultaneously over 255 minutes across three performance spaces totalling 2,000 square metres. Filled with subtle echoes from previous Stan's Cafe shows, this unique site-specific production will be performed just twice by a cast of 13 who, without any rehearsals, will work from individual instructions and timetables. Unlike conventional scripts, these will not include dialogue, and each actor will only see their own specific directions. With raked and cabaret styled seating available and a bar open throughout serving flaming cocktails as well as snacks and more familiar drinks, audience members can choose how to watch the show.

Synopsis:

Voodoo City was inspired by two black cider bottles found lying in a road aligned in such a way as to suggest they were not litter but a hex. Working through familiar strategies of reading general Birmingham madness as evidence of shamanistic practice, we came to a show which is about, amongst other things, trying to change the world through private acts of magic. The show starts with a long poem written as a spell. It then crashes into an unchoreographed dance. From there to: an act of possession, image making, domestic magic, slapstick, more dancing and the building of a model city.
