Ginka was born in Götingen, Germany on October 31st 1942 and named Gisela. She studied in Munich, Berlin and Paris. She became a lecturer teaching at the universities in Berlin, Munich and Zurich. In 1974 she began writing under the name of Ginka Steinwachs and as well as writing for the theatre has written for radio and had novels published. Her work has been described as "surreal feminism".
