In Great Grandmother's Day
Synopsis:
The story is set in a small village just before the First World War, and is based loosely on what happened in Burston, Norfolk between 1910 and 1914. The husband of the headmistress of the village school, also a teacher there, organizes the agricultural labourers to take over the Parish Council, and this results in the headmistress and her husband being dismissed. The children feel this unfair and go on strike, and a separate "strike school" is set up, and eventually recognized by the authorities. The play concentrates on the effect this has upon the relationships between the children - how friendships are created and destroyed and family loyalties tested. The relevance of the general social unrest of the time is also indicated by means of songs concerning the suffragettes, the Trade Unions and the birth of the Labour Party. There are thirteen songs, and recorder parts are provided in the score.
