Synopsis: | Directed by Valerie Doulton, Artistic Director, The Live Literature Company, this is the public dress rehearsal performance of Tagore's most celebrated play, The Post Office. Originally written in 1912, 'The Post Office' is rich in symbolism and allegory, and is a play about man's passionate cry for faraway and spiritual freedom. At the heart of the play is a young boy, through whose imaginative mind life is celebrated, even though this child is facing death. Mixing simplicity with sophistication, the play's universal appeal has made it a world classic. Gandi was spellbound by the play in Calcutta in 1917. Anita Desai called it, as modest as a dewdrop, as profound as the ocean'.

Parts other: | - | |||||
Notes: | Original Playwright - Rabindranath Tagore
Synopsis: | Set in a mythological world reminiscent of India's greatest epic poems, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, the play shows the effect of systematic mechanisation of human resources as a means of serving a corrupt tyranny. At its heart is the character of Nandini, a beautiful young girl who inspires a revolution against the cruel regime. She acts as a catalyst for change in a society resigned to its bleak fate working in the goldmines of a great King who is himself imprisoned behind an iron curtain of his own making. Her symbol is a simple red flower from which she draws great resolve and eventually brings a kingdom to its knees.
