Peter was born on January 8th 1917 in Trenton, Tennessee, the youngest of four children. He was named Matthew Hillsman Taylor but from infancy was called "Petie". He attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville and Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio. In 1940 he officially changed his name to Peter. He enrolled in the Army and served from 1941 to 1945 becoming a sergeant. In 1943 he married the poet Eleanor Lilly Ross and they had two children. He wrote novels and short stories and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1987 for "A Summons to Memphis" He died from pneumonia on November 2 1994.
