the TEAM is the Theatre of the Emerging American Moment. We are a New York City-based Theatre company dedicated to dissecting and celebrating the experience of living in America today. We devise plays by examining a wealth of material, ranging from existing texts (fiction, theory, Drama, etc.) to images taken from visual art and film, and then combining that research with original writing and staging. the work combines aggressive athleticism with delicate examinations of the social and political factors shaping our world today, keeping the brain, eyes, and heart of the audience constantly stimulated. At times a rock concert, at times a sporting event, the TEAM has been described as avant-garde meets MTV. Ours is a Theatre that does not deny its youth. Our productions are relentless out of necessity, multi-tasking between hyper-intellectual commentaries and exuberANT physicality; we know of no other way to behave. With sweat and humor, the TEAM's plays uphold the fragility and poeticism of the human body and spirit. The TEAM is Jessica Almasy, Frank Boyd, Rachel Chavkin, Stephanie Douglass, Jill Frutkin, Brian Hastert, Jake Heinrichs, Matt Hubbs, Libby King, Jake Margolin, Dave Polato, Kristen Sieh, and Nick Vaughan.

Architecting

Architecting
(workshop production 3LD Art & Technology Center, NY, 2008) From a condemned bar in post-Katrina New Orleans, to the mythical South of Gone with the Wind, to a lonely gas station in Arkansas, Architecting is a multi-media road-tripping requiem for modern America. Ghosts of American prejudice haunt a play, that questions whether this country has ever recovered from slavery and the Civil War. Aggressive athleticism is combined with wicked humor, video crashes against song, and at the center of it all stand humans confronting the world as it changes radically under their feet.

Faster

Synopsis:
A woman trapped on a treadmill. She is in the web of the Directorate of Time, an all too real subset of the United States Military, responsible for maintaining time in the country. Inspired by James Gleick's bestseller Faster: The Acceleration of Just About Everything, Faster is a metaphysical romp through both time and memory. Alice, fractured by catastrophe, exists on many planes and is portrayed by three actresses. One has not left her house in over a year and desperately reaches out one night to the only soul she can find, a 411 operator. Another is stuck reliving the same relationship again and again, both moments of distance and moments of joy. The last is running on a treadmill, driven faster and faster by the demons of regret and efficiency. Devised from diverse texts including treatises on time theory, Jeanette Winterson's GUT Symmetries, Henry Miller, Samuel Beckett, and original writings, Faster looks at the juxtaposition between an accelerating culture and a universe that is literally slowing down. The TEAM's sideways look at life in New York, healing and forging connections in a rushing world, and making an imprint on a dying universe.

Give Up! Start Over! (In the darkest of times I look to Richard Nixon for hope)

Give Up! Start Over! (In the darkest of times I look to Richard Nixon for hope)
A woman has swallowed her television. She is the subject of a scientific experiment: Can a human survive if no one is watching? Isolated in a room with a video camera that may or may not connect her to the outside world, the Experiment begins to channel personalities stolen from game shows, Access Hollywood, and most infamously, America's 37th President. On a desperate quest of the real, she is haunted by his immortal words: "Isn't it a hell of a thing? That the fate of a great nation can depend on camera angles. . ." Give Up! Start Over! is a relentless solo performance about reality television, Richard Nixon, and the search for authenticity in America.

Holler Sessions, The

Synopsis:
The Holler Sessions, staged as a live radio show, centers around one mans burning obsession for American jazz. Ray, an explosive Kansas City DJ, broadcasts his love of jazz from his shoddy studio with an infectious passion for this uniquely American art form. Rays maniacal rants, razor-sharp insights, and mildly scatological humor are interspersed with truly gorgeous music and lots of space for listening. The Holler Sessions serves as a jazz primer for the uninitiated, a powerful reminder for jazz fans, and an irreverent love letter to the best thing America has ever created.

Howl

Synopsis:
Described as what "jazz would look like if put into human form," HOWL is a wild physical work that takes the text of Allen Ginsberg's revolutionary poem and matches it with four restless and visionary young men. Opening with the immortal line, "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness," HOWL imagines Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and Carl Solomon - to whom the poem is dedicated, as well as the ghost of Naomi Ginsberg - Allen's mother, and sets them to life using the poem as guide. True to both the romance and indulgence of the beats, this work takes Ginsberg at face value: "Most men are blind and live their lives out in blindness. Poets are damned, but they are not blind. They see with the eyes of angels." HOWL is a play about men and madness in America.

Mission Drift

Mission Drift
Mission Drift is a pioneering journey across the USA in pursuit of the soul of American capitalism, created in the blazing heat of a Las Vegas June. Told through atomic blasts, lizard ballet, and original music that fuses Las Vegas glitz with Western ballads and Southern blues, it features two interweaving love stories: the epic saga of an immortal teenage Dutch couple as they travel west from Amsterdam to New Amsterdam in 1624, all the way to modern-day financially devastated Las Vegas, and the intimate portrait of a cocktail waitress and a cowboy grappling with the 2008 recession and their crumbling American dreams. Over it all reigns Miss Atomic, a seductive storyteller/singer inspired by the 1950s beauty pageants celebrating the bombs tested in the Nevada desert. She is the symbol of creation and destruction, bankruptcy and bonanza, and this profoundly unique American city..

Kennedy. A year passes and a new American family is forged in eggs and flour, music and magic. Primer for a Failed Superpower

Synopsis:
We are preparing for a shifting paradigm. We want to know if and how you can teach someone about the America that you or your parents or grandparents grew up with, and how young people teach us to prepare for the future. We are forming a three-generation cover band with teenagers, ourselves, and retirees to hijack the jukebox musical with protest songs.

Scottish Enlightenment Project

Synopsis:
Our tales are similar but the endings are different. In America, the underdog battles against all the odds to triumph in the dying seconds of the game. In Scotland, we dwell on the moments of glorious defeat snatched from the jaws of victory; the glass isn't just half empty, it's been smashed on the bar and waved in your face. On the eve of the Scottish referendum, this new collaboration between the National Theatre of Scotland and The TEAM uses the Scottish Enlightenment as a springboard to dive into the murky depths of our national mythologies.

Notes:
Written collaboratively, with Davey Anderson overseeing the group writing process, directed by TEAM Artistic Director Rachel Chavkin, the production will feature Scottish performers Brian Ferguson and Sandy Grierson, and members of the TEAM.

Thousand Natural Shocks, A

Thousand Natural Shocks, A
A time-bending quartet inspired by Hamlet and other visions of the end of the world. The king is dead and Hamlet and Laertes are called home from their spoiled college lives to find Denmark in chaos - and Ophelia in a blonde wig working at the airport tourist bureau. Horatio records everything, all the while pushing Hamlet to be the leader his country needs. The four youths are rocketed back and forth through time and space: preparations for the king's funeral collide with boxing matches, crash into a wild-eyed Ophelia commanding a million Danish teens to drown themselves in Poland Spring while Laertes blossoms into an aspiring neocon. All the while Hamlet, paralyzed and ironic at the center, struggles to figure out how to take his place in history. Billy Joel wails We Didn't Start the Fire at the funeral in this rock concert deconstruction of Shakespeare's Hamlet for Generation X.

Waiting For You on the Corner of. . .

Synopsis:
A woman sits in a Kansas City office long after hours. She writes, shreds & writes again, evolving a message that boils a terribly complex set of emotions into a short series of words perfect for the inside of a greeting card. Turning out to the audience, she teaches the intricate process through which a Hallmark card is created. Seeking clarity, she pictures cornfields. A sunset. A family farm. A fireplace with stockings, light in the darkness. She is not in Kansas City anymore. . . A DJ is trapped in his booth. Outside uninformed voices are everywhere. Inside are gift cards to give away. He is fanatical about the KC scene that helped defined jazz in America, he only sees unmitigated chaos now. Improvisation takes discipline, & he sees none. Everything is paste, or masochistically dissonant. He speaks to the audience beyond his glass, dissects the mechanics of a jazz session: one musician measuring another, the protocol for voicing disrespect, how consensus on a tune is abandoned & reclaimed. He teaches listening. And the music carries him around the river's bend, to where the Missouri meets the Mississippi & heads north, arriving in Davenport, where a white kid named Bix learned to play the trumpet. An examination of what it means to be a union on personal and national levels. How do we listen? How do we talk to each other? And what do we do while waiting for the other ______ to be ready.
