Kate Tempest, one of five children, was born Kate Calvert on 22nd December 1985 and grew up in Brockley, southeast London. She dropped out of school before A-levels, then studied music at Croydons Brit School for Performing Arts & Technology, before enrolling for a degree in literature at Goldsmiths, but felt ambivalent about academic work. Meanwhile she worked in a record shop, lived briefly in a squat and began performing her poems at protest camps and festivals. She started out as a rapper, toured the spoken word circuit for a number of years and began writing for theatre in 2012. Her work includes Balance, an album recorded with her band Sound of Rum; Everything Speaks in its Own Way, a collection of poems published on her own imprint Zingaro; GlassHouse, a forum theatre play for Cardboard Citizens; and the plays Wasted and Hopelessly Devoted for Paines Plough. Her epic narrative poem Brand New Ancients won the Ted Hughes Prize. It completed a sell-out run in the UK and New York and won a Herald Angel at Edinburgh Fringe

Brand New Ancients

Brand New Ancients
"the gods are in the betting shops, the gods are in the cafe, the gods can't afford the deposit on their flat. . . Winged sandals tearing up the pavement, Me, you, everyone, brand new ancients". Poet and rapper Kate Tempest tells an everyday epic over an exhilarating live score played by tuba, cello, violin, drums and electronics, that finds the gods of today all around us and reveals that our true heroes are much closer that we think.

Glasshouse

Synopsis:
A story about family and how hard it can be to keep loving when everything seems to have fallen apart. "'So here we are, today, a day when everything comes to a head. All I wanted was to change my life, but life changed me instead." Three short stories take you into the minds of three members of the same family. They fail to stay together and struggle to survive apart. Framed by Kate Tempest's haunting poetry, the plays draws us into a dark and gritty London illuminated by moments of unexpected tenderness.

Notes:
This is not theatre as you know it. Forum Theatre invites the audience to stop the action in the second part of the evening, and come on stage and rehearse alternative scenarios to lead to positive changes. Contains strong language and scenes of drug-taking & violence.

Wasted

Wasted
"I'm making a decision. I'm changing things. This is it." Three old friends. One remarkable day. For Ted, Danny and Charlotte, it's time to seize control. Make a difference. Change things. This is it. A day-glo trip through the parks and raves and cafes of South London, where life is what you make it. the rapid fire rhymes of Kate Tempest paint a picture of lives less ordinary in an unforgiving world, sound-tracked by an exhilarating score. Kate Tempest is the UK's most exciting performance poet, currently serving up a storm in the UK hip-hop scene with her band Sound Of Rum. Wasted is her debut play and features her trademark lyrical ferocity in a dynamic theatrical staging. A play about love, life and losing your mind.
