Theatre-Rites has a distinct and unique approach to creating theatre for young people. It has established an outstanding reputation for excellence and innovation since its formation in 1995. The company's prime aim is to create work which feeds the imaginations of young people and gives them a memorable theatrical experience. The company is committed to working with artists, whether sculptors, poets, painters, video or installation artists in order to present children with unusual contemporary imagery and to push the boundaries of theatrical form. This, together with performance, puppetry and sound creates a rich mixture to inspire young audiences. Theatre-Rites believes that children should be offered theatrical experiences that are challenging and inspirational. Their work touches the souls of adults and children alike. It goes beyond conventional story into the realm of the imagination giving it a wide universal appeal. Theatre-Rites was founded by the late Penny Bernand. Hang On
Synopsis:
In a playful collaboration, the renowned children's theatre company Theatre-Rites joins together with the impressive aerial artists of Ockam's Razor to produce a family show to challenge parent and childhood fear alike. Basing the show around triangles - of objects, mobiles and people - the three aerial artists are joined by three performers new to the Organisations: a juggler (Stefano Di Renzo), a percussionist (Nao Masuda) and actor/improviser Eric MacLennan. Starting the show off with six coats on hangers in triangles of lights the performers weave in and out of the space whilst MacLennan engages with the audience. His search for the right coat brought about the delighted giggles of the younger members of the Dress Circle which added to the enjoyment of the gentle comedy.

Mischief
Synopsis:
A collaboration between the innovative group Theatre-Rites, which has produced several world-class shows for young people, and choreographer Arthur Pita, this 65-minute piece of dance-theatre will tickle the fancy of both over-sevens and adults who haven't entirely mis-laid their inner child. The premise is child's play: eight young dancers interact and play with curved lengths of foam that are ingeniously used both as set and props. From the opening moments, when the curtain rises on what appears to be a sinister enchanted forest, to the end, when the audience get to play with the strips of foam, this is an entertaining and witty ex-ploration of space and structures -including the human body - which is almost architectural in intent and execution.
