Colin Thomas works as both a Theatre critic and a playwright. He has been the contributing editor for Theatre for the Georgia Straight for the past 18 years. He has also appeared regularly on CBC radio's Art Beat and he was the West Coast Theatre correspondent for CBC radio's the Arts Tonight. His work as a critic is informed by extensive practical experience. Thomas's three most recent plays for young people have been honoured nationally at the Chalmers Children's Playwriting Awards and all are available in published form. Those plays are: One Thousand Cranes; Two Weeks, Twice a Year; and Flesh and Blood. Productions of his work for young people have also won Jessie Awards in Vancouver and Dora Awards in Toronto. Virtually every major children's Theatre company in Canada has mounted his work. Prestigious American productions include those at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and the Kennedy Centre in Washington, DC. His plays have also been seen in many other countries, including Germany, Austria, the former Soviet Union, Japan, Hong Kong, and AustraliA. His writing has been translated into French, Japanese, and German. Sex is My Religion, the first script that Thomas wrote expressly for adults, has been received with unanimous acclaim. To date, productions of Sex Is My Religion have been mounted by Out West Theatre in Vancouver, Buddies in Bad Times, in Toronto, the Group in Houston, Texas, and Buggeln Productions in New York. Scirocco Press published the script in the anthology, Plague of the Gorgeous and Other Tales. John Alleyene, artistic director of Ballet British Columbia, created a ballet inspired by and named after the play. Thomas was a regular contributor to Sesame Street and CBC television is currently considering Fairy Christmas, his screenplay for a one-hour television special about a little boy who wants to fly.
