CharlesTidler was born in northwestern Ohio 23 April 1946 and grew up in Tipton, Indiana. He attended Purdue University to study poetry and philosophy with Barriss Mills and William Gass, founded the poetry journal Wordjock and earned a B.A. in English literature. A Vietnam War draft resister, Charles immigrated to Canada in 1968, making his home on Salt Spring Island and became a Canadian citizen in 1976. His jazz-inspired one act plays, Blind Dancers (1979) and Straight Ahead (1981), have been produced across Canada, the United States, on a tour of England and in London's West End. They won a Chalmers Outstanding Play Award and a Governor General's Award nomination. Other notable stage plays include The Butcher's Apron (1990), Fabulous Yellow Roman Candle (1993) at the Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival, and Red Mango, a blues (2000). Charles is also a prolific and Actra Award winning radio dramatist with over 40 scripts produced by CBC Radio. Publications include Straw Things: Selected Poetry and Song (2008) and two novels, Going to New Orleans (2004) and Hard Hed: The Hoosier Chapman Papers (2011). The father of two sons, he lives in Victoria, BC.

Blind Dancers
Synopsis:
1947, the trombone player of a Big Band wakes up in a seedy hotel with a young fan. they discover that they got married the night before.

Blind Dancers was subsequently produced with a companion one act Straight Ahead at Toronto Free Theatre in 1981; at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, summer '81; at Tricycle Theatre, London, '82.
