My Life in a Nutshell
Synopsis:
My Life in a Nutshell is a puppetry work by Hanne Tierney featuring barely clothed life-size marionettes constructed of burlap, manipulated through a counterweight system of approximately 80 strings, operated as a "vertical keyboard" in full view of the audience. Combined with a spoken text along with live music, this theatrical instrument turns a full stage of inanimate objects into players in an emotionally charged piece. The story centers on a menage-a-trois. As the plot unfolds, the play presents compelling characters in a geometry of triangular relationships, with connections that dissolve without fanfare and relationships that re-form without regret. All the while, the figure of Death moves through this geometry.

Strange Tales of Liaozhai
Synopsis:
In Strange Tales of Liaozhai, artist and master puppeteer Hanne Tierney brings to life a full stage of objects using an intricate counterweight system containing over 100 strings, which she manipulates in full view of the audience. Expressive silks, lanterns and bamboo poles become central players in two emotionally charged tales, adapted from 18th century supernatural Chinese folk tales compiled by scholar Pu Songling. A love story springs forth through Tierneys accomplished abstract puppetry, while a tale of magic pigeons is depicted through hand-drawn projections created by Hannah Wasileski. This work also features original compositions by Jane Wang, which she performs live on toy pianos, double bass and self-constructed instruments.
