Peter Turrini (b. 1944 in St. Margareten, Carinthia, Austria) belongs to the most successful writers of the German speaking contemporary theatre world. His first play, "Shooting Rats" (1971, first UK production in 2009) provoked a major scandal and changed the way of German theatre writing. For many years the outspoken political and social critic was one of Austria's most controversial and uncompromising young dramatists. Meanwhile he has become a much-noted moral authority. Despite massive verbal attacks, Turrini never shied away from taking a firm stand. Turrini's extensive work includes plays (numerous of them premiered at the National Burgtheater in Vienna), as well as novels, essays, opera librettos, speeches, radio plays, and screenplays. His sociocritical statements and proclamations are always very clear and unambiguous - even when expressed as parables. Rather than presenting an authentic picture of reality, in Turrini's understanding it is the function of the theatre to exaggerate and, by doing so, to raise the consciousness of the public.

Synopsis: | Infanticide presents the young mother standing on trial. Interrupted by the voices of the judge, her father and her boyfriend who urge her to justify herself, she reveals her story, her confusion, her anger and her pain. Can her crime be understood as a political act? Composed as a powerful psychological monologue, the play interweaves thought and heart in a skilful theatrical way. Forty years after its initial opening in Austria, this critically acclaimed play by the successful political playwright Peter Turrini finally arrives on a British stage.

Notes: | Original Playwright - Peter Turrini. This is the British premier of the first play written by now well established Austrian dramatist Peter Turrini in 1967. Based on an idea from Willard Manus and written in Viennese dialect (the published text found it necessary to print a parallel German text to make it comprehensible to non-Viennese) what is presented follows Turrini's requirement that any production should be relocated to the time and place of its performance. What is presented here, a co-production with Oval House Theatre Elsewhere project, has been adapted by co-director Rachel Briscoe improvising with a group of actors and work-shopping with young South Londoners to develop a piece that stays true to the structure and intention of the original while reflecting contemporary and local experience.
Synopsis: | When a boy takes a girl for a first date on a rubbish dump, its pretty clear what he has in mind. He wants to expose the pointlessness of consumerist society, force her to recognise the layers of junk that people hide themselves behind. And then have sex.
