Johnson Is Leaving
Synopsis:
In 1974, John Wain, the poet, literary critic, novelist and playwright, wrote a biography of Samuel Johnson. It was considered one of the finest of its kind. Some ten years later, Wain met Bruce Purchase, the towering Shakespearean actor. They set about converting Johnson's story into a monodrama for Bruce to perform. Wain's exquisite prose will take audiences through 18th century cosmopolitan literary life. The play takes place on the last day of Johnson's life. Written in the present, Johnson prepares to die, with all the humour and the wit with which he lived.
