Poteen
Synopsis:
A romantic comedy set in 1926, Ireland. Poteen is the story of a young widow who sells homemade mash at local wakes to pay the yearly revenue tax. Will enough neighbors die in time to save her farm? Complicating matters further is news of a possible future rail link which may doom her neighbor's farm, and the arrival of the revenue man during the wake of the most popular drinker in town. The play culminates in a competitive darts game between her suitor and her brother. Poitin, pronounced pweh-CHEEN, is a traditional Irish strong alcoholic beverage, distilled in a small copper pot. Made from either potatoes or grain, the production of poteen was outlawed in 1661, and remained illegal until the late 1990s.
