Mark Jason Williams recently received the 2011 Planet Connections Award for Outstanding Playwriting of a New Script for his play, The Other Day, a drama that explores the complexities of intimate relationships, both gay and straight, and follows four characters in an emotional journey through insecurities, romance, addiction, betrayal, love, loss and redemption. The play appeared at the Robert Moss Theater as part of the Planet Connections Theater Festivity, and was also performed at the 2011 Chicago Fringe Festival. He is also a survivor of childhood leukaemia, an experience that directly influenced his play, Recovery, a funny and compelling drama whose characters are connected by their confrontation with leukaemia--a catalyst that brings to the fore the ultimate questions about the essential meaning of existence, the challenges of facing death, and the will to continue and forge new, meaningful connections. The play made its Off-Off-Broadway debut in 2010 as part of the Planet Connections Theater Festivity, and was also seen in the 2011 Minnesota Fringe Festival and the 15th Annual New York International Fringe Festival. In a review of the production, nytheatre.com wrote, "Recovery has a great raw emotional, universal quality." Mark is an lifelong New Yorker. He has a BFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where he had the honour of studying with incredible writers Gary Garrison, George Malko, Viva Knight, Richard Wesley, and Venable Herndon. Additional theatre credits include: Crazy at Heart (Barrow Group Theater), Smiles to Saturn (Manhattan Repertory Theater), The Prince Charming Conspiracy (78th Street Theater), and Birthday Wishes (Manhattan Theatre Source). His latest production, Acts of Love, can be seen in the upcoming 2012 Planet Connections Theatre Festivity in June.
