Act IV

Synopsis:
In Phil Willmott's Act IV, the unseating and rapid departure for Dubai of a sitting MP, leaving his staff behind in a vacuum, mirrored the final act of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, with an assortment of relationships coming to naught and the bleak prospect of nothing save another election in . . . a few months' time although the campaign manager didn't try to shoot the ex-member.

Beautiful and Damned

Synopsis:
This evocative and glittering musical, set in the 1920's, follows the story of an outrageously glamorous and fashionable couple - the Scott Fitzgeralds. He's a successful young author and she's the stylish young wife who, together, become the envy of all with their high spending and high-flying lifestyle. they created their own world of enchantment. Scott christened the period the Jazz Age, and Zelda lived it. Yet the darker tale that lay behind the dazzling facade just begged to be told. British singer/songwriter Roger Cook (I d Like To Teach the World To Sing/Talking In Your Sleep) felt this was definitely the case and linking up with an old friend and fellow songwriter, Les Reed (It's Not Unusual/Delilah), along with bookwriter Kit Hesketh Harvey (the Vicar Of Dibley) they set about creating a musical out of the fabled couple who epitomised the triumph and the tragedy of the decade.<

Country Magic

Synopsis:
Although first produced in the West End as the Enchanted Cottage in 1921, on Broadway two years later and in both a silent film version and again by Hollywood in 1945, this was a play entirely unknown to me and not what you might expect from the writer of comedies and farces such as Trelawny of the Wells, the Magistrate and Dandy Dick, though perhaps not so surprising if you think of the social criticism of plays like the Second Mrs Tanqueray. Written in the aftermath of the 1914-1918 War, it presents us with the harsh reality of the lives of mentally and physically damaged survivors and the reception they got on their return.

Dick Barton - Special Agent

Dick Barton - Special Agent
In its time Dick Barton: Special Agent made radio history. It began as a weekday 15-minute serial on the BBC Light Programme in 1947, depicting the adventures of the prototype action hero and his two trusty sidekicks, Snowy and Jock. It appealed to young and old alike, always ended with a clifthanger situation, and a feature of the programme was the announcer who endeavoured to whip up audience interest. It ran until 1951 when the same scriptwriters were commissioned to write the Archers which replaced the serial as a sort of farming Dick Barton. On radio Dick Barton was always played tongue in cheek. For the stage, author Phil Willmott has taken this to the n-th degree and sent it up rotten. This presents the audience with every possible opportunity of indulging in nostalgia because, like the radio serial, everybody hams like mad, not least the announcer and his occasional fit of the giggles. the plot is ersatz-007 about arch-villain Baron Scarheart, head of EFIL or Evil Foreigners in London, and his beautiful but treacherous agent Maria Heartburn, who try to rule the UK by poisoning the country's tea. Enter Dick Barton, Snowy and Jock to foil this dastardly plan. the plot takes a back seat because it's the jokes that matter and, with a hero with a name like Dick, the possibilities are endless.

Dick Whittington - the Panto!

Synopsis:
Pantomime about a boy and his cat who set off to London to make their fortune - usually with Dick's Brother (Idle Jack) and mother - there they usually meet Baron Fitzwarren and sail away to seek treasure. In some versions King Rat goes with them to steal the treasure, in others they reach a land infested with rats where they haven't heard of cats and Dick does a deal, returning home rich he becomes Lord Mayor of London. Based extremely loosely on a real person (Richard Whittington, 1350 to 1423), there is a statue of the cat outside the Whittington Hospital in North London where Dick is supposed to have heard the bells say "Turn again Whittington, Lord Mayor of London" as he trudged away from the city. First recorded panto on this theme was in 1814.

Encounter

Synopsis:
In the early 1940s Noel Coward wrote BRIEF ENCOUNTER, the celebrated celluloid weepy in which characters played by Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard, contemplate an affair in a suffocating suburban world where it will mean disgrace and ruin. Noel Coward was gay and many commentators believe the hit film reflects his own frustrations at a time when homosexuality was illegal and it was impossible for one man to openly love another, or to represent this on stage or screen. Multi-award winning writer/director Phil Willmott takes the world of BRIEF ENCOUNTER as a setting for a completely new play imagining the kind of gay romance Noel Coward and his contemporaries were forbidden to write. A chance encounter at a railway station in 1945 leads two men to consider how much they must sacrifice in order to be together. This evocative, heartbreaking production invites us to consider how far we've come and how much we've still in common with our grandfather's generation.

Jason and the Argonauts

Jason and the Argonauts
based on the classic tale. This ancient legend has enchanted people of all ages inspiring 1950s Hollywood, modern game designers and storytelling down the centuries. This brand new version especially conceived for the Scoop at More London injects a little brainiac science into the mix too to keep modern kids intrigued and on their toes. Expect all the knockabout comedy, toe-tapping songs, ingenious puppetry and summer fun that make the Steam Industry's free family shows an unmissable teatime treat in the Scoop at More London.

lago

Synopsis:
A dark sequel to Peter Pan reuniting J. M. Barrie's characters as young adults on the eve of the First World War. How has their extraordinary childhood equipped them for reality? And how much does the child we were inform the adult we become? Peter Pan was the Harry Potter of the golden age of Edwardian children's literature. Tickets to Barrie's play and copies of the book sold in huge quantities with hardly a nursery in the Empire left untouched by the phenomenon. But when those children grew to adulthood, the world they encountered was a far cry from the utopia of Never Never Land. How did exposure to J. M. Barrie's masterpiece equip an army of frightened young men to deal with the horrors of trench warfare. . .and the complexities of grown up relationships? The culture clash between the enchantment of childhood fantasy and real life provides a rich vein for humour and drama as this original story explores the hopes and dreams of one particular young officer on the eve of battle with a copy of Peter Pan in his pocket. As sleep begins to blur his dreams and reality, fact and fiction become entangled and he finds himself central to one final "awfully big adventure" with the grown-up Wendy, John, Michael and Tinker Bell.

Lear

Synopsis:
Driven by love, jealousy and betrayal, Lear is forced into a savage world of chaos and ruin by the very people closest to the Monarchs' heart - her Daughters. In a world turned upside down Lear is thrust into isolation and must fight to cling on to her own identity, throne and kingdom. Phil Willmott's vibrant new production of Shakespeare's masterpiece, KING LEAR, puts a mother at the heart of the action supposing that it is a queen who, weary of public office, divides the kingdom amongst her daughters. But the old woman finds it impossible to retire gracefully and as her mental faculties begin to fail she's cast out by her eldest children, as their sister prepares to lead a French invasion in retaliation. Meanwhile the Duke of Gloucester's equally ruthless son plots to steal his brothers inheritance and the younger generations align in a savage plot to mercilessly destroy their parents. But will they succeed? An epic double family drama about mothers and daughters, fathers and sons.

Once Upon A Time At the Adelphi

Once Upon A Time At the Adelphi
Phil Willmott's dazzling musical centres on the iconic Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool which saw the great and the glamorous pass through its doors from its heyday in the 1920s to 1940s. Cleverly juxtaposing the past and the present, we follow the love story of four young staff members - Nick and Jo in the present, Young Alice and Thompson in the past - brought to life with the vibrant and poignant reminiscences of Older Alice. 1930s Hollywood stars, cowboy Roy Rogers and tango supremo Carlos Gardel, mingle with Russian acrobats, American G.I.s, aristocratic guests and hotel employees.

Princess Caraboo

Princess Caraboo
The extraordinary true story of a beautiful young woman who tricked her way from vagrancy to wealth and power in Regency England by pretending to be a shipwrecked Princess. Maintaining the deception becomes imperative as the stakes get higher and higher and what begins as a desperate ploy by a petty criminal to evade the law escalates into a national scandal threatening to ruin anyone whose compassion, lust or ambition has blinded them to the truth. As 'Princess Caraboo' becomes the superstar of her day she discovers the price to be paid for living a lie and the cost of drawing the man she loves into her deceit. We all of us tell little lies; to make life run smoother, to land the perfect job, to win and keep the ones we love. This entertaining, glamorous and romantic story invites us all to consider the impact of life's embellishments in defining who we really are and who we would like to be.

Uncle Ebenezer

Uncle Ebenezer
Dickens' Christmas classic is given an unusual twist in this new musical version. Scrooge's nephew, a social reformer fired up by the inequalities he has witnessed, narrates the magical story of his uncle's transformation for his family on Christmas Eve, as perhaps Dickens himself might have done. This gives a fresh perspective on an oft-told story, while maintaining the much-loved tradition of the original. the score combines carols with songs created by setting specially written lyrics to favourite tunes by great composers. the musical can be staged either by a small group of actor-musicians, or with a company of over twenty actors, making it perfect for schools and community groups looking for a new angle on a festive favourite.
