Aladdin

Zadia, a spirited princess and Aladdin himself are written as childhood friends; the romantic side of their relationship is played down.the storyline involves a monkey and a baby dragon, both of which appeal to the younger members of the audience.Novel touches includes the method by which Abanazar obtains the l it takes him ten years to do this, by which time Aladdin and his wife have had a son, who plays a small but crucial part of the action. As a neat twist, the Genie of the Lamp proves to be the long lost uncle of the Genie of the Ring.

Babes In the Magic Wood

Synopsis:
BABES IN the MAGIC WOOD has an original storyline, and does not resemble the usual pantomime versions. Widow Crockett and her babes, Simple Simon and Contrary Mary, run a toyshop, their biggest job being the making of toys for Father Christmas's order. One Christmas Eve they are very behind with their work and wish their Fairy Godmother could help. She appears and, under her spell, three magic toys, Jack-in-the-Box, Ragdoll and Clockwork Panda, finish the job while the Crockett family are asleep. Later the rascally robbers Pick and Nick see a chance, impersonating Father Christmas, to grab the toys for themselves. they are foiled, but much more perilous dangers follow. the Fairy Godmother turns out to be a wicked Superwitch, who almost makes a cauldron meal of the children in the Magic Wood. After many adventures the children, aided by the magic toys, and a clever donkey, triumph. they find themselves back in the toyshop - and it was all a dream. But was it? the magic toys have the last word.

BFG, The (Big Friendly Giant)

BFG, The (Big Friendly Giant)
Roald Dahl's classic book about the 24-feet-high Big Friendly Giant and a little orphan called Sophie brings to the stage some of Dahl's most memorable characters. the BFG and Sophie team up to save the children of England from the child-eating giants, Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater, Bonecruncher, Meatdripper, Childchewer, and Gizzardgulper. they are assisted by the Queen of England and the Heads of the Army and Airforce with their helicopters. Locations include the BFG's cave in Giant Country, Dream Country and Buckingham Palace. the play uses a framing device: Sophie is celebrating her birthday with her friends, and they act out Sophie's favourite story - the BFG. For Seattle Children's theatre, this framing device was removed and the story told "for real". Both versions are available. the play offers opportunities for puppetry, and imaginatively solves the problems of scale. Dahl's humour, delightful use of nonsense language, and unique combination of fairytale and contemporary storytelling are faithfully adapted to the stage

Dick Whittington And Wondercat

Synopsis:
In David Wood's version of the story, a 'play-within-a-play' technique is used. the townsfolk of London gather to greet Sir Richard Whittington on his installation as Lord Mayor. A voice of dissent in the crowd belongs to a young boy who resents the acclaim given to 'a wealthy nob like him', who is unlikely to help ordinary folk. the crowd explain to the boy that this Lord Mayor is different and has helped many ordinary people; they then tell the story of Dick Whittington, and the boy plays the young Dick.He wins the friendship of young Alice, and becomes involved with the Fitzwarren family and store, a brace of swash-buckling pirates, the lovable Wondercat, and a traditional 'dame' character - Bertha the Cook. Dick's story takes him from the depths of despair and disgrace to his triumph, with Wondercat, defeating the rats infesting the home of the Queen of the Barbary Coast, who turns out to have been educated in England!

Fantastic Mr Fox

Synopsis:
Roald Dahl's much-loved story follows the vain attempts of three farmers, Boggis, Bunce and Bean, one fat, one short, one lean, to get rid of the fox who regularly steals food from their farms. they try to kill him by any means possible. Outwitted at every turn, the farmer's ploys backfire. FANTASTIC MR FOX devises a plan which will ensure full stomachs for not only his family, but all his friends, who celebrate with a sumptuous feast. David Wood writes : the Belgrade theatre, Coventry, well-known for working with the local community, asked me to write the play for a professional company, joined by a large community company of all ages. This proved to be not only a tremendous spectacle, with more than sixty people on stage, but also a true celebration of community life, echoing Dahl's sentiments in the story.

Flibberty And the Penguin

Synopsis:
Young Penguin has come from Iceland to find his Mother and Father. This must be done before the spring weather becomes too warm. He falls in with Flibberty, a genial goblin, who helps him in his search. they incur the wrath of Krafty Kingfisher, who accuses the Penguin of stealing a fish from him. On their journey the two meet, among others, two Silly Cuckoos busy practising their spring song, a helpful Bus Driver/Conductor, and the famous Mr. Maestro who has come to town to conduct a concert (he can only understand singing, not talking). Eventually the parent penguins are discovered in the zoo. Flibberty and Young Penguin manage to set them free, and to put Krafty Kingfisher in their place. Everything ends well, even for Kingfisher, as all the characters gather in the Concert Hall to join (with the audience) in a song to spring. David Wood writes: I have always thought this play was somewhat underrated! Influenced by Feydeau, I tried to introduce several different themes and make them all converge in a series of funny confrontations. I still like this play, even though I haven't seen a production for many years! Characters like the Three-Headed Knowall, the Silly Cuckoos, Mr. Maestro and his assistant, Master Ministrone are among my favourite creations

Goodnight Mister Tom

Goodnight Mister Tom
One of the most uplifting stories ever written, Michelle Magorian's stunning Goodnight Mister Tom is brought gloriously to life in this stage adaptation by David Wood the UK's National Children's Dramatist' (The Times). Set during the dark and dangerous build-up to the Second World War, Goodnight Mister Tom follows sad young William Beech, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside and builds a remarkable and moving friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley. All seems perfect until William is devastatingly summoned by his mother back to London. Ideal Gnome Expedition, The

Synopsis:
After rescuing a toy duck from the dustbin in their backyard, Mr. Fisher and Mr. Wheeler, two temporarily nomadic garden gnomes, decide to venture over the garden wall into the big wide world. their object is to find a holiday island, just like the 'Big Ones', but being unused to the hazards of the concrete jungle of the town, they almost don't make it. Until they meet Chips, that is. Chips is a very cool cat, and with his help the gnomes and Baby Duck survive several urban adventures before reaching their island in the sun. Although it is not quite as expected (a traffic island!), they all agree that it is the best holiday they have ever had. In the end, however, they return to their backyard, taking the homeless chips with them, and, happy and content, they agree that there's no place like home!

Jack the Lad

Synopsis:
Following the success of their collaboration on ROBIN HOOD, David Wood and Dave and Toni Arthur wrote JACK the LAD, a musical celebration of Jack, the ubiquitous hero or everyman of English legend, myth and folklore - from Little Jack Horner, through Jack and the Beanstalk to Spring Heeled Jack, the Terror of London. the setting is a gypsy encampment, where a series of Jack tales and songs are performed by the gypsies to celebrate the 80th birthday of their senior member - affectionately known as Jack the Lad. the play, therefore, depicts contemporary gypsy life, as well as traditional gypsy customs and superstitions, and is a delightful amalgam of the traditional Arts of story-telling, singing and dancing, with a mumming play, a shadow-mime and puppetry also employed within the main framework. David Wood writes: I would love this play to have more productions! the original production was a joyful celebration of folk tradition and story-telling, and offered opportunities for a versatile cast. I'm sure that professional and amateur companies would find it rewarding to perform. the music is exhilarating and the contemporary gypsy framework is relevant and thought provoking

Mother Goose's Golden Christmas

Synopsis:
This musical play bears little resemblance to the traditional tale of Mother Goose. It takes its inspiration from the books of nursery rhymes under the umbrElla title "Mother Goose", published over the last two centuries. the setting is in fact a giant book, in which Mother Goose lives with her famous five 'Little' nursery rhyme characters. the play opens with them preparing a surprise Christmas tree for her. It seems they are tired of always being called 'Little' and doing the same things (losing sheep, putting the kettle on etc.), so Mother Goose incorporates them all in a new story involving such characters as the Big Bad Wolf, the Bigger Badder Wolf, a Giant, and Miss Muffet's Spider. the main action centres on the capture and rescue of the Goose with the Golden Eggs. Helped to a certain extent by the permanently sleepy Fairy Lethargia, each of the 'Little' characters has his or her 'big moment' during the quest, and when it is all over they return home to the Book for a grand Christmas party.

Noddy

Synopsis:
Enid Blyton's name is synonymous with children's stories, none being more famous than NODDY. David Wood, the acclaimed children's Dramatist, draws upon the most entertaining and instructive of the twenty-four books for this popular adaptation. Exploiting the excitement of life theatre with imaginative staging, music, light, puppetry and lots of audience participation, the play will be a hit with all, whether they know Noddy or not. the plot may be familiar enough - Noddy and his friends pitted against the sneering goblins and a greedy witch - but the treatment is fresh, funny and inventive. As in the original works, Noddy learns the value of friendship, hard work and honesty, through a series of adventures : building his house in Toytown, driving a car, outwitting his enemies, even surviving a hair-raising experience at Noah's Ark!

Pied Piper, The

Synopsis:
the PIED PIPER is based on the traditional tale made famous by Robert Browning, and uses much of Browning's poem. This adaptation has the Piper making his first appearance as a modern busker, delighting the children with his music. their parents, though, are not so delighted and soon put a stop to the energetic dancing, telling the children and the busker that music has been banned on this street for hundreds of years. the children ask why. In reply, the townsfolk act out the story of the Pied Piper, playing their medieval counterparts and involving the children and the busker as the Piper. But when the tale is told, the Piper once again enchants the children with his music, and the horrified townsfolk suddenly realise that he has come back to claim his fee, refused to him all those years ago. All ends happily, however, for it seems that, consumed by guilt, the medieval townsfolk put aside the thousand gilders, just in case the Piper should ever return. the Piper accepts his fee, and frees Hamelin from his curse at long last.

A combination of contemporary music, carols, recitatives, dialogue and direct speech to the audience, this family musical is a modern equivalent of the medieval mystery play - simple yet not naive, humorous yet not disrespectful, devotional yet not overtly pious. the action of the first half takes us from the Annunciation to the Nativity. the second half includes the Blessing in the temple, the killing of the Firstborn and the Flight into Egypt. the set can be simple and basic: levels can be used to advantage, particularly in the staging of Herod's scenes and Gabriel's 'appearances'.

See-Saw Tree, The

Synopsis:
the SEE-SAW TREE looks at an important environmental issue in an entertaining but thought-provoking way. the See-Saw Tree, an ancient oak, stands on ground which is ear-marked for development into a children's playground by Mr. Jay, owner of the nearby supermarket. A public meeting is called in the village hall to discuss his proposals, which include cutting down the three-hundred-year-old oak tree. the audience vote in favour, but Mr. Bunn, an environmental activist protests and shows us the devastating effect such plans will have on the inhabitants of the tree - the main part of the play tells the story of these creatures (who can be played by their human equivalents), their panic and their resilience and their evacuation from the tree. In the end, the audience is asked to vote whether the See-Saw Tree should be saved or not.

Spot's Birthday Party

Synopsis:
In this adaptation of the very popular SPOT books, David Wood has created an exciting introduction to theatre for small children. Using the simple plot of a birthday party, complete with entertainer, Spot (a puppy) and his animal friends, Steve (a monkey), Tom ( a crocodile), and Helen (a Hippo), helped by Sam and Sally (Spot's Mother and Father), enjoy the birthday party, reflecting children's early experiences such as guests arriving, present-giving, game-playing and going home thank-yous. there is a certain amount of fun educational content as well as masses of audience participation throughout. the children are treated more as party guests than simply as spectators. there is plenty of fun for the actors, too, with singing, character movement and, optionally, some acrobatic skills to show off!

there Was An Old Woman

Synopsis:
the play was written specifically as a small cast musical, but with a large chorus of children. Mother Shipton is written as a 'Dame' character, but she has been played successfully by both male and female actors. Though Mother Shipton's shoe is crowded to its laces, she lives there happily with her vast brood of children, among them Jack and Jill. Unfortunately, however, the shoe is actually the property of a Giant, who lost it and has been looking for it - with one bare foot - ever since. One day the Great Boon arrives, a genial and charming, but not terribly efficient, magician, looking for a Circus in which he is due to appear. His attempts to save Mother Shipton and family from the Giant involve the loss of her shoe because he is unable to bring the Giant down to human size and harmlessness without also reducing the shoe. However, after a lot of adventures and muddled magic all ends happily. there is even a Circus with all the acts provided by Mother Shipton's talented children.

Tom's Midnight Garden

Synopsis:
This play is an adaptation of Philippa Pearce's 1950s classic boy's nightly voyage to a Victorian past. Quarantined in his Aunt's and Uncle's stuffy flat because his brother has measles, Tom is restless and bored. Intrigued by a GrandFather clock, religiously wound by the elderly owner of the house, Mrs. Bartholomew, Tom is startled one night to hear the clock strike thirteen! Slipping out of bed he goes to what in his time is a concrete backyard, only to discover a beautiful Victorian garden of the 1880s. He meets the unhappy orphan, Hatty, who initially is the only person who can see him, and he visits her each night at the same hour, writing enthusiastically to his brother, Peter, about his adventures. But although Tom stays the same exuberant 10-year-old, Hatty grows into a young woman during these visits. Before the story can reach its outcome, Tom has to return to his parents, but the truth is revealed in a touching denouement.

Twits, The

Twits, The
Set in a circus ring, which offers great opportunities for a spectacular production, this adaptation brings Dahl's ideas to life and has the confidence to add something new. Bored with playing silly tricks on one another, the grotesque, satisfyingly revolting couple, Mr & Mrs Twit, turn their attentions to capturing and training a family of monkeys, the Muggle-wumps, for a circus act. the monkey's cruel incarceration in a cage is avenged when the Birds, led by the Roly-Poly Bird, trick the Twits into believing the world has turned up-side-down. the audience helps in the trick by pretending to be up-side-down (they put their shoes on their outstretched hands).
