Cry, Trojans! (Troilus & Cressida)
Synopsis:
The Wooster Groups newest production, Cry, Trojans!, tackles the Trojan side of Shakespeares dark and scabrous Trojan War play about sincere love corrupted and the downfall of a noble hero. The piece originated as a co-production between The Wooster Group and the Royal Shakespeare Company for the World Shakespeare Festival, presented in conjunction with the 2012 London Olympics. In that version, the RSC played the Greeks and the Group played the Trojans. Director Elizabeth LeCompte and the Wooster Group have converted the collaboration into an independent piece, reimagining the Trojans as a pastiche fictional tribe of early Americans struggling to assert its dignity in the face of doom.
Notes:
Original Playwright - Shakespeare. CRY, TROJANS! (Troilus & Cressida) began as a co-production with the Royal Shakespeare Company. That original production, TROILUS AND CRESSIDA, was commissioned by the RSC for the World Shakespeare Festival, produced for the London 2012 Olympics Festival.

Early Shaker Spirituals
Synopsis:
In EARLY SHAKER SPIRITUALS, The Wooster Group channels the 1976 LP of the same name recorded by the Sisters of the Shaker Community in Sabbathday Lake, Maine, giving a new live rendering to their songs and finding inspiration for a series of dances. Cynthia Hedstrom, Elizabeth LeCompte, Frances McDormand and Suzzy Roche sing the songs. In the dances, the singers are joined by Matthew Brown, Modesto Jimenez, Bobby McElver, Bebe Miller and Andrew Schneider. EARLY SHAKER SPIRITUALS returns to an artistic practice that the Group has used throughout its history: working with record albums as source material for original productions, among them HULA (1981) and L.S.D. (&JUST THE HIGH POINTS&) (1984). The piece also expresses the Groups long-standing interest in the Shakers, a millenarian, celibate, communitarian sect. In 1980, Elizabeth LeCompte, Kate Valk and other members of the company visited the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community and met with Sister R. Mildred Barker. Around that time, the company first began listening to the record album that forms the basis for this new piece.

Hamlet
Synopsis:
In The Wooster Group's HAMLET, Shakespeare's classic tragedy is re-imagined by mixing and repurposing Richard Burton's 1964 Broadway production, directed by John Gielgud. The Burton production was recorded in live performance from 17 camera angles and edited into a film that was shown as a special event for only two days in nearly 1,000 movie houses across the U.S. The idea of bringing a live theater experience to thousands of simultaneous viewers in different cities was trumpeted as a new form called "Theatrofilm," made possible through "the miracle of Electronovision." The Wooster Group attempts to reverse the process, reconstructing a hypothetical theater piece from the fragmentary evidence of the edited film. We channel the ghost of the legendary 1964 performance, descending into a kind of madness, intentionally replacing our own spirit with the spirit of another.

La Didone
Synopsis:
In The Wooster Group's production of LA DIDONE, Francesco Cavalli's 1641 opera, with libretto by Francesco Busenello, collides with Mario Bava's cult movie Terrore nello spazio (1965) in a war-like symbiosis, dropping Aeneas' ships onto a forbidding planetary landscape and forming a synergy between early baroque opera and pre-moonlanding sci-fi.

Vieux Carre
Synopsis:
Like Williams' first big success The Glass Menagerie, Vieux Carré (1977) is a "memory play," set in the boarding house in New Orleans where Williams himself stayed as a young man during the Depression. The young writer, as narrator, remembers his artistic and sexual awakening there. Inhabitants of the house swirl up out of the writer's mind as archetypal Williams characters, longing for release and haunted by thwarted dreams. In The Wooster Group's version of Vieux Carré, the Group experiments with new modes of expression for Williams' lyric voice.
