Call Me Doctor
Synopsis:
'Call Me Doctor' is based on the acquittal of John Saint John Long, an 'irregular' doctor tried for the manslaughter of a patient in 1831. Though the procedure he used was reckless in the extreme, he was found not guilty partly because of the number of influential members of the public who were prepared to speak in his defence and partly because the distinction between qualified and unqualified doctors was blurred. This play, though comic, is a warning against belief in too-simple solutions. A monument to John Saint John Long can be found at Kensal Green cemetery.

Groundnut Days
Synopsis:
A historical play based on the Labour Government's attempt to plant 3 million acres of groundnuts in Tanganyika immediately after WW2. If the aims of the scheme were laudable, the priorities changed once it came up against difficulties and when there was mounting opposition in Parliament. Those who originally trumpeted the scheme began to distance themselves and until it was the powerless who were left to pick up the pieces (literally in the play). Attitudes of the late 1940's are not the same as now, though they provide comparison and contrast. The play has a contemporary resonance, with a Government over-reliant on spin and individual Ministers' refusal to take responsibility. Aid to Africa is topical, and the play offers a historical perspective

Homehelp
Synopsis:
Finbar and Alan are living happily in a gay relationship when Orla unexpectedly arrives from Ireland. And she is determined to change everything. Finbar becomes the prize to be fought over as his indecision is ruthlessly exploited in this serious comedy. It is, perhaps, better to tell the truth and have done with it rather than forever trying to cover up what others might find unpalatable?
