Death Takes a Holiday

Death Takes a Holiday
In Death Takes a Holiday, it's just after World War I and the loneliest of souls arrives at an Italian villa disguised as a handsome young Prince, and for the first time experiences the joys and heartbreaks of life. The show began as an Alberto Casella play from the 1920s that was made into a much-loved 1934 film starring Fredric March as Death, disguised as a debonair nobleman. The original film was remade in 1998 as Meet Joe Black, starring Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins.

Grand Hotel - the Musical

Grand Hotel - the Musical
version of Vicki Baum's Grand Hotel, set in Rome post-World War II instead of Berlin post-World War I, and the old man Kringelein has been made the focus of the action. In the musical he is an old scullery worker who, learning he hasn't long to live, takes his life savings and moves upstairs "where the halls are full of music"; singing requirements for this role are modest but female lead (an opera star) must sing well; good singers required for part of the Baron and the semi-prostitute

Nine

Nine
Based on Fellini's classic film 8 ½ , this spectacular musical delighted Broadway theatergoers in a hit revival in 2003 starring Antonio Banderas. Nine is the story of a celebrated film director Guido Contini and his attempts to come up with a plot for his next film as he is pursued by hordes of beautiful women, all clamoring to be loved by him and him alone. Flashbacks reveal the substance of his life-which will become the material for his next film: a musical version of the Casanova story. Nine is now a major motion picture from Rob Marshall, the acclaimed director of the 2002 film version of Chicago. Of the Broadway musical, Marshall said it is a sumptuous and emotional work that translates naturally to the film musical genre because of its seamless relationship between fantasy and reality. Composer and lyricist Maury Yeston worked on the film adaptation and created three new songs for the movie musical, which was released in December, 2009.

Notes:

Titanic

Titanic
Titanic is truly an ensemble production as we see when we are introduced to the crew and voyagers in the first scene. In a series of songs and song fragments, we meet the owner/financier, the captain, the crew, and the passengers; we learn both how the Titanic came to be commissioned, built and provisioned as well as how the various individuals came to be standing on the Southampton dock on April 10, 1912. the scene effectively conveys the broad themes which underscore the show (especially the rigid social class structure in America and abroad and the economics of the time which fueled another major wave of immigration to the United States).
