Angel's BoneAngel's Bone
Synopsis:
Angel's Bone is a new work of opera-theatre by composer Du Yun and librettist Royce Vavrek that follows the plight of two angels whose nostalgia for earthly delights has, mysteriously, brought them back to our world. They are found battered and bruised from their long journey by a man and his wife. The married couple is in the midst of a financial crisis, they seem to have grown far apart from one another in this marriage, and the unspoken aggression between them is palpable; nevertheless, Mr. and Mrs. X.E. set out to nurse the wounded angels back to health: they bathe them, wash the dirt from their nails. . .then lock them in a room, leaving them a claw foot bathtub for a shared bed, and decide to exploit these magical beings for wealth and personal gains. Angel's Bone melds chamber music, theatre, pop music, spoken word, opera, cabaret and electronics, exploring the dark effects and motivations behind modern-day slavery and the trafficking industry. The opera is a collaboration between Du Yun and Royce Vavrek - two of the most compelling young artists working in the field today - and is directed by multidisciplinary rising star Michael McQuilken. The work is scored for four soloists - coming disparately from the operatic, punk, folk, and musical theatre worlds - plus a chorus, electronics, and an ensemble of ten instrumentalists under the music direction of Julian Wachner.
Notes:
In 2011, the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia commissioned Du Yun to create an evening of works, including a new composition for a chamber concert song cycle exploring the issue of modern-day slavery and human trafficking. Commissioned for a full opera version by Beth Morrison Projects and HERE, Angels Bone received two work-in-progress performances as a part of PROTOTYPE 2014 and will receive its 8-performance world premiere in a co-production with Trinity Wall Street at 3LD Art & Technology Center.
