Alexandre Dumas fils was the illegitimate son of Alexandre Dumas and Marie-Catherine Labay and was born in Paris on July 27th 1824. His father officially recognised him as his son in 1831and removed him from his mother. He went to the Institution Goubaux and to the College Bourbon. He was taunted at school because of his illegitimacy and the fact that one of his great grandparents had been black. In 1844 he met the courtesan, Marie Duplessis - she became the inspiration for "La Dame Aux Camellias". In 1864 he married Nadeia Naryschkine and they had a daughter. He married again after the death of his wife to Henriette Regnier, his mistress of eight years. Needing money he adapted "La Dame Aux Camellias" into a stage play. It was a huge success and lead to a successful career as a playwright. He was admitted to the Academie Francais in 1874 and awarded the Legion d'Honeur in 1894. He died on November 27th 1895. He was buried in Cimetiere Montmartre in Paris - a hundred metres away Marie Duplessis is interred.

All I ever wanted was a man who wouldn't ask me questions Across the foyer of a crowded theatre, a handsome young man catches sight of the most expensive prostitute in town. When they meet, a mutual obsession is ignited - one that tears both their worlds apart. Set amidst the glittering splendours and miseries of 19th century Paris, Camille has scandalised and fascinated audiences and theatres, cinemas and opera houses for over a hundred and fifty years. Neil Bartlett's new version returns to the original novel for its shockingly frank and emotional portrayal of a woman who can afford anything - except to fall in love. | ||||||
