Nikolai Gogol was born in Sorchintsy in Ukraine in 1809. After a brief spell in government service in St Petersburg, he won fame as a short story writer, and in 1836, his satirical comedy The Government Inspector created such a furore that Gogol left Russia to settle in Rome, in self-imposed exile. Marriage, revised from an eariler draft titled The Suitors, was first performed in 1842 and The Gamblers, Gogol's only other completed play, was premiered in 1843. Gogol published the first part of his great picaresque novel Dead Souls in 1842, but religious mania in his later years caused him to destroy its sequel and contributed to his early death in Moscow in 1852.

This version of A Government Inspector is a Yorkshire take on Gogol's 1836 fantastical Russian satire. The setting is here transposed to a small northern town in the twenty-first century, geographically and culturally remote from the centre of government. Into a small Pennine town a mysterious stranger is mistaken for a government inspector. Fearing discovery of their corrupt goings-on, the town's unscrupulous councillors attempt to ingratiate themselves. Bribes, backhanders and brown envelopes abound, and the young chap, who has an eye for a quick buck, takes full advantage with hilarious results. Deborah McAndrew's version of A Government Inspector goes beyond literal translation, but is absolutely faithful to Gogol's stated intention to peel away the surface layers of ordinary people and expose the corruption beneath. It's exuberant, brilliantly witty and original, and audiences will revel in the references to government officials' expenses claims and women's beach volley ball...

Notes: | Original Playwright - Nikolai Gogol. The universal mark of good satire is still to make audiences laugh at the worst traits in human nature. Here, in his own words, is how Morris Panych updated these three great comedy classics from a century ago:
The Government Inspector is peopled with the most duplicitous, under-handed, and shifty characters ever to appear in literature; yet, they are funny. I made the lead character Khlestakov and his companion Osip former members of an acting troupe, to open up the fourth wall of the theatre. Inspired by Gogol himself, who has the characters speak to the audience directly in the last scene, this is not really a post-modern indulgence, but part of a long theatrical tradition of direct audience address.

Notes: | Original Playwright - Nikolai Gogol. An adaptation (lasting about an hour and fifteen minutes) of the classic Russian farce by Nikolai Gogol. Includes 5 specially written songs (music available).
Incompetent and corrupt officials in a small provincial town are thrown into a panic when they learn that a Government Inspector is to visit, perhaps incognito. When Klestakoff, a well-dressed rogue, arrives with his streetwise servant, he quickly realises that the townsfolk imagine he is the Inspector and takes advantage of the officials' bribes and flattery. No sooner have the townsfolk discovered their mistake - just as Klestakoff leaves - than the real Inspector appears. This adaptation has an sting in the tail that gives another twist to the themes of disguise and mistaken identity.

Synopsis: | Deciding that it is time he was married, Podkoliosin, a long-time bachelor (and minor court councillor), engages a matchmaker, Fiolka, to find him a wife of suitable social statusnot to mention fortune. Fiolka comes up with Agafya, the spinster daughter of a wealthy merchant, who is seeking a husband of demonstrably higher social position. Podkoliosin deigns to visit the charming Agafya, only to discover that the bustling Fiolka has rounded up four other suitors as well, which leads to some unseemlyand hilariousbickering among the preening competitors. The suitors are all quite different (one enormously fat, one painfully skinny, one terribly tiny, another notoriously prissy), which enriches the farcical contretemps that resultand adds to the relish with which Podkoliosin's sidekick, the scheming Kochkariev, sets about winning Agafya for his friend. In the end he succeeds, but perhaps too well, as he also provides Podkoliosin with a glimpse of what marriage really entails and, as the curtain falls, the terrified would-be suitor makes his escapeleaping unceremoniously from a second story window and back to the comforting routine of blissful bachelorhood.

Bashmachkin's desperate struggle with poverty in a society defined by possessions is particularly resonant in the midst of Britain's current economic climate, and with his scrupulous and scathing realism as well as philosophical depth, Gogol is still considered one of the greatest ever satirists. the company offers a faithful and culturally authentic interpretation of Nikolai Gogol's absurdist satire, one of Russia's most important texts, which has inspired Russian writers from Nabokov to Dostoyevsky
