Alfred Jarry was born on September 8th 1873, in Laval, Mayenne in France. When he was fifteen he and a fellow class mate wrote a marionette play - mainly poking fun at their overweight physics teacher. The play "Les Polonais" and the character Pere Heb became the basis for Ubu Roi. Aged seventeen he moved to Paris to prepare for the entry examination into ecole Normale Superiere but failed. He had started writing poetry and had a volume of poems published in 1893. Both his parents died in 1893. Jarry had discovered absinthe - the "green goddess" as he called it. He once in honour of the goddess painted his face green and rode around Paris on his bicycle. In 1894 he was drafted into the army - however, he was only five feet tall and the army did not have uniforms for someone that small. As he looked so comical in his oversized uniform he was excused parade and marching. He was later discharged. Back in Paris he went back to drinking and writing. He became involved with an arts journal "L'Ymagier". December 10 1896 saw the opening night of "Ubu Roi". A near riot ensued after the first word of the play "Merde" was spoken. The play only had two performances and was not produced again until 1907. He moved into a flat that had been made out of a larger house. The ceiling was very low - he had no trouble but guests had to stoop. A neighbour complained that his target shooting was a danger to her children - Jarry told her that if any of them did get shot - he would help her make replacements. He died on November 1st 1907 of tuberculosis aggravated by drug and alcohol abuse.

Synopsis: | Germinated in the author's youth, and developed over his creative lifetime, the three UBU PLAYS embody Alfred Jarry's growing disenchantment with the disjointed society of his time-which is our time as well. The second play, UBU CUCKOLDED, continues and expands this biting, savage assessment of modern society and its foibles and brings Ubu into conflict, albeit fitfully, with his conscience. In the third play, UBU ENCHAINED, the cycle is completed in a heightened, outrageous satire on the concept of freedom in its varying guises and interpretations

Synopsis: | Germinated in the author's youth, and developed over his creative lifetime, the three UBU PLAYS embody Alfred Jarry's growing disenchantment with the disjointed society of his time-which is our time as well. The first play, UBU REX, is a strange parody of Macbeth, set in an imaginary Poland, which details the rise to the throne of Pere Ubu, a grotesque, outlandish figure who personifies all that is base and stupid in mankind. The language and action of the play are terse and direct, yet eloquent in conveying the startling parallels between the ruthless, ugly world of Ubu and our own times.
