Synopsis:

The action takes place in a nameless totalitarian state ruled over with eerie contentment by an infant king and his uncle the regent. When 'the last remaining revolutionary' agrees to take an oath of loyalty to the state and so secure his release from prison, the chief of police seems less than happy. After all, the declaration could signal his own force's obsolescence, especially as his zealous sergeant, working as an agent provocateur, finds it impossible to stir up antigovernment sentiment among the unnaturally placid citizens. What are the police to do when everyone is utterly conformist?

Synopsis:

It is a very bad day for the chief of police. After 10 years languishing in prison, the state's last remaining political prisoner is insisting on taking an oath of loyalty to the country and its leader, and must therefore be released. Attempts by an enthusiastic police sergeant to act as an agent provocateur and stir uo dissension among the populatidn have failed as the people persistently refuse to break the law. The consequences of all this are gradually dawning on the chief of police even as he triesio bribe the poli6cal prisoner to remain a dissident. For the police and the criminal, the secret service and the revolutionary are entirely dependent on each other. You can't have one without the other. Can you even have such a thing as loyalty if there is no disloyalty? Written in 1958 by the Polish playwright Slawomir Mrozek as a satire on the totalitarian state, The Police serves pretty well for today too, not least because, as adaptor Anders Lustgarten suggests, you need an enemy if you are going to wage a war on terror. Despite the orange Guanthamo-style prison suits, director Christopher Loscher never overplays the contemporary relevance in a production that demonstrates good acting, flair and confidence.
Lyn Gardner, Guardian

Synopsis:

Eastern European playwrights sometimes appear to be too obscure and gnomic for their own good - until one remembers that often they had to camouflage what they were really saying in the bad otd days before the wall came down, for fear of reprisals. A Summer's Day, written in 1983, was the first play that illustrious Polish dramatist, Slawomir Mrozek, was allowed to write for the foreign theatre. The work of Mrozek has been performed in Britain before (Tom Stoppard translated Tango for the National), but not often, and one can see why. British audiences are not over-keen on philosophically heavy drama, even when it's rooted in strong personal interaction, as A Summer's Day is.The action opens on a park bench. The Young Man has hung a noose from a tree and is about to end it all. The Gentleman enters (you can tell it's an Eastern European play when the characters don't have names). The Young Man chickens Out, and tells the Gentleman that this is entirely symptomatic of his life. He can't even commit suicide properly. He witters on about his lack of success, as a swimmer, with women etc. and conjectures about the success that the silent but sartorially splendid Gentleman no doubt enjoys. Eventually The Gentleman speaks. Yes, he is successful at everything he tries but this doesn't make him happy. The Gentleman too has come to the park to commit suicide. A beautifully absurdist sequence follows in which The Young Man wants to do the job for him - because that means he will have succeeded at something in his lifel
Joe McCallum, What's On

Apart from very popular and world touring productions, many performing arts events are largely forgotten about in a matter of months. Traces may remain in various collections, but few collecting agencies, such as libraries, catalogue each flyer or program individually. Hence, unless one knows that an event took place at a certain time in a certain place, tracking down such an event as part of a research project is often a matter of chance. Where research needs to be carried out on high profile and well-documented productions only, this is not a problem. However, both the historian and the analyst will attest that the cultural, political, or sociological context in which a performing arts event takes place is also of major importance, as are the other events that took place in close proximity, either in place or time. A good overview of such productions provides us with a 'social document' that can greatly enhance cultural studies in ways that extend far beyond the narrow confines of theatre history. For instance, data such as this can be used to monitor the health of communities, particularly when used in association with data obtained from other social science disciplines. When one researches a particular playwright one might want to know about all the productions of plays by that author; if one wants to investigate what choices a particular audience had over a period of history and compare this to, say, an ethnic breakdown of the population, one would need to know broadly all the events that took place during that time. If one wanted to do a statistical analysis on the shift in popularity of a genre over one or more generations, it is important to have knowledge of most of the relevant major and minor performance events that took place. In this context, issues of aesthetic quality and the professionalism of a production - which will of course have an impact on such studies - are not the determining factors when deciding to include or exclude events, since all events are the raw material for such research.
