Aleksandr Nikolayevich Ostrovsky , 1823-86, Russian dramatist. Ostrovsky's first play, The Bankrupt (1847; reworked as It's a Family Affair, 1850), was widely read but was banned from the stage. He left a government clerical post in 1851 to devote his time to writing. Most of his more than 50 plays deal with the merchant or petty-official classes and the conflicts within their patriarchal families. All but eight of his works were written in blank verse, using colloquial language. Ostrovsky's masterpiece is The Storm (1860), the tragedy of a woman driven to suicide. The play is the basis for Janacek's opera Katia Kabanova. Ostrovsky's popular play Poverty Is No Crime (1854) concerns a marriage of convenience. Rimsky-Korsakov used his Snow Maiden (1873) as the libretto of an opera and Tchaikovsky drew upon several plays by Ostrovsky as inspiration for musical works.

Synopsis: | False bankruptcy, spoilt rich kids, matchmakers on the take and lawyers on the bottle. Welcome to the world of Moscow's merchant class, the nouveau riche of 19th century Russia. Written in 1849 then promptly banned, Alexander Ostrovsky's debut comedy is a scathing satire of a vulgar and deluded society, where blackmail and hypocrisy abound, the rouble rules, and everyone can be bought, sold or borrowed. William Thomas (Twin Town, Gavin and Stacey, Belonging) is aging merchant Bolshov, who dreams of a daughter-free retirement whilst clinging to his wealth in this new adaptation by Simon Crowther (Sherman Cymru's The Get Together, ITV's Coronation Street). Lee Mengo (Stella, Skins, Gwaith Cartref) is Bolshov's hapless clerk Lazar, in love with the boss's daughter but embroiled in his scheme...Sian Reeves (Cutting It and Mount Pleasant) brings her trademark comedy to the outlandish, lavish Ustinya, matchmaker extraordinaire and all round wheeler dealer who gets tripped up by her love of sable coats... live ones, of course. The question is, who has an eye for the big chance?

The play shows a world in which merchants abuse workers, social progress is spat upon and religion is a reactionary force. In such circumstances, the heroine, Katerina, has little hope. Saddled with a weak husband and a tyrannical mother-in-law, she falls helplessly in love with a rich merchant's nephew. Her guilt forces her to reveal the brief affair with fatal consequences.
