Erich Maria Remarque was born in Osnabr?ck. The family originally from France had Germanised their name so he was Erich Paul Remark. He changed his name after his experiences in World War One. He had joined up at the age of eighteen and was wounded on several occasions. He used his experiences to write "All Quiet of the Western Front" It was an enormous success - selling 1.2 million copies in its first year in print. It was filmed in 1930 by Lewis Milestone (who changed the ending from that in the book - the now famous image of the hand reaching for a butterfly when Paul is shot). The Nazis banned and burned his books. The film, also, was banned in Germany where it was not shown until the 1950s. He had his citizenship revoked. He moved to Switzerland and later to the United States where he became an American citizen. He was married three times twice to Jutts Else Sambona (known as Jeanne) and lastly to film star Paulette Goddard. He died in Switzerland on September 25th 1970
