Synopsis: | London 1923. The Great War is over. The men have returned from the front, the women from the factories. Life is returning to normal. Longing for excitement and fun, socialite Miss Julie is throwing a midsummer party whilst her father is away. Running the house is John the Butler, a man carrying his own scars from the trenches and with ambition beyond his means. His loyal fiancee, Christine, has also been changed. A determined member of the suffragette movement, she too has her own agenda for a brighter future. As the evening unfolds, what promised to be a night of celebration is consumed by a dark, forbidden journey into passion, betrayal and despair.

Synopsis: | In this line-by-line reinvention of August Strindberg's classic Miss Julie, writer and director Robert Cucuzza distills an essential tale of class and sexual power dynamics and transports it to modern-day Pittsburgh. Set during a failed car dealership's liquidation party, Cattywampus traces the rise and fall of Julie, the owner's wife, as she tries to escape the flaccid clutch of her disinterested husband. She sets out to seduce the unsophisticated detailer, Donnie, and gets much more than what she bargained fora dance partner, a goofy playmate, a cuckold-maker, and a partner in crime. Determined that Donnie and his restored Ford Pinto are her escape hatch out of married misery, she makes a last ditch effort and gambles it all on his cracked plan to relocate to Florida. But in a world that is so economically out-of-whack, she finds that her dreams of escape are no match for what seems like a predetermined fate. Cucuzza and his collaborators orchestrate an intense rollercoaster ride through distinctly American formsa sweeping country-western score written by Juli Crockett, Appalachian line dancing choreographed by Jordana Che Tobackalong with a combination of naturalistic acting and aggressive physicality that binds Strindberg's characters, both rich and poor, vividly exposing their shared vulnerability in a time of economic collapse.

A gripping new version of Strindberg's masterly, darkly hilarious depiction of the struggles and strains of marriage. Meet Edgar and Alice. Married for almost thirty years, theirs is a relationship of mutual explosive loathing. Strindberg's tale paints a compelling and bitterly funny portrait of a magnificently doomed couple, whose ongoing battle threatens not only their future, but that of their friends and children as well. Howard Brenton's Dances of Death includes both Part One and the rarely performed Part Two of this masterpiece of European theatre, condensed into a single two-act drama.

Synopsis: | Dance of Death is a piercing examination of a stifling and embittered marriage, founded on cruelty and a lust for power. The arrival of a divorced cousin further adds to the tension. The setting is a remote British Army garrison island off the coast of Co Donegal, between 1913 and 1916. The political turbulence and upheaval during this period of Irish history form a fitting backdrop for this extraordinary play and give it contemporary relevance.

Synopsis: | As their twenty-fifth anniversary approaches, Alice and Edgar, ever at each other's throats, find their mutual hatred at an all-time high. Their latest maid has just quit; their children have abandoned them; and they can't keep company with any of the locals on their remote island because they despise them. After twenty-five years, they can't abide one another either. Their miserable lives get a jolt when Alice's cousin Kurt arrives, newly stationed on the island. Kurt becomes the pawn used by Edgar and Alice to finally get the best of each other in what truly becomes a dance of death. Strindberg's 1900 masterpiece was the first naturalistic portrait of a marriage in modern drama, and the trail it blazed made possible Long Day's Journey into Night and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Written in 1901, a mysterious amalgam of Freud, Alice in Wonderland and Strindberg's own private symbolism, A Dream Play follows the logic of a dream: A young woman comes from another world to see if life is really as difficult as people make it out to be. Characters merge into each other, locations change in an instant and a locked door becomes an obsessive recurrent image. As Strindberg wrote in his preface, he wanted 'to imitate the disjointed yet seemingly logical shape of a dream. Everything can happen, everything is possible and probable. Time and place do not exist.'. From a literal translation by Charlotte Barslund. Introduction by Caryl Churchill.

Notes: | Original Playwright - August Strindberg. A Dream Play has been adapted by novelist and dramatist Rachel Connor, devised by the whole cast
Synopsis: | Deja Vu Ensemble present a site-specific adaptation of August Strindberg's iconic play Aggie is a dreamer, arriving from nowhere, seeking answers and finding only questions. Is it possible for humans to escape suffering? Why do we wait so long for things to change? And how are we trapped inside our own stories? Join Aggie on her journey into the multifarious worlds of theatre and schoolroom, hell and paradise. See if you can answer the riddle of what lies behind the locked door. And determine for yourself: is the experience real, or is it a dream? Swedish playwright August Strindberg conceived his phantasmagorical A Dream Play at the end of the nineteenth century. He wrote in his introduction that it has 'the disjointed yet seemingly logical shape of a dream.' Characters 'split, double, multiply, evaporate, condense, dissolve and merge. But one consciousness rules them all: the dreamer's.' In this site-specific performance, we invite you to ask: who is the dreamer? Is it Aggie? Is it you? Responding to the urban space of the Northern Quarter and to the interior of the Nexus Cafe, Deja Vu Ensemble's version of A Dream Play is updated for a contemporary audience. You will be invited to respond to events in an interactive way, as a participant, moving around the space as the story unfolds.

Synopsis: | One of Strindberg's most famous works, the play deals with a brilliant but erratic military officer and scientist who clashes with his wife on the question of whether their daughter should be sent away for her schooling or kept at home. A renowned misogynist, Strindberg used the play to dramatize what he considered to be the weaknesses and failings of women, and the diabolical way in which they sought to poison the hearts and minds of the men who had the misfortune to love them. But while Strindberg's view of the female sex may have been somewhat lopsided, in the present adaptation the motherher thoughts, and feelings, and aspirationsis given equal attention. While the laws of the time gave a father unreasonable control over his children, and the mother was forced to use her wiles to fight against this, the present version makes it clear that this was not always done with the sinister reasons which Strindberg ascribed in mind. Here the father and the mother are given equal voicemaking, at last, for a fair fight, and conveying a heightened theatricality which brings added power to one of the modern theatre's truly great plays.

"the Father still has the power to astonish. Richard Nelson's new adaptation of the Swedish text speaks in clean, spare English prose, the kind that remains discreetly outside time without betraying the conventions of the period when the play was written (1887). . .. It's not exactly news to report that the Father is an extraordinary play. the news is that its ability to shock remains undiminished as,in the course of twenty-four hours, the increasingly chilly, twenty-year marriage of the Captain and the willful Laura escalates into a war to the death. We are deep in territory that Ingmar Bergman would later explore, though never with quite such harrowing results. . . .Mr Nelson's excellent adaptation." Vincent Canby, the New York Times

Strindberg's gripping psychological Drama about the battle of the sexes, in a spiky new version by Mike Poulton. the Father is about a marriage wrecked by the parents' need to claim exclusive rights to their daughter's love, and to determine her future. By turns comic and deeply tragic, it shows an affable, scholarly Father fall victim to a once loving wife who will stop at nothing to do what she thinks is right for her child. the only possible outcome is a grim, yet thrilling fight to the death in circumstances of almost unbearable tension.

Synopsis: | In his world premiere translation and modern adaptation of Miss Julie, artistic director of the New Moon Repertory Theatre Per Brahe sets his adaptation in the 1950s American South. It takes place just before the arrival of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is a story about a black man and a white woman caught in deep lust for one another despite racial and social dangers and limitations. It is a story about two people in conflict with their race and class. Strindberg's play was written following the industrial age, just prior to the emancipation of women and the rise of the working class. These issues present a compelling dynamic when set in the racist climate of the American South where the status roles between white women and black men were rigidly set within the American racial context

Notes: | Original Playwright - August Strindberg, version by David Eldridge, from a literal translation by Charlotte Barslund
Written in a fortnight and often regarded as Strindberg's masterpiece, Miss Julie is shocking in subject-matter, revolutionary in technique, and was fiercely attacked on publication for immorality. Sweden, 1894. Midsummer night's celebrations are in full swing but the Count's daughter, the beautiful and imperious Miss Julie, feels trapped and alone. Downstairs in the servants' kitchen, handsome and rebellious footman Jean is feeling restless. When they meet a passion is ignited that soon spirals out of control. Strindberg's masterpiece caused a scandal when first produced - and has been hugely popular ever since - for its viscerally honest portrait of the class system and human sexuality. The conflict between sexual passion and social position is presented in Miss Julie with startling modernity. The play's premiere at Strindberg's experimental theatre in Denmark in 1889 was banned by the censor and its first public production three years later in Berlin aroused such protests that it was withdrawn after one performance. Miss Julie has since become one of Strindberg's most popular and frequently performed plays. This new version by highly-acclaimed playwright and translator David Eldridge is contemporary but faithful, and combines accessibility with fluency.

Synopsis: | A striking, sensual and timeless adaptation of Strindberg's masterpiece. - Young socialite Miss Julie struggles to find her place and sense of purpose in life. After breaking up with her latest fiance, she amuses herself by attending the servants' ball on Midsummer's Eve and takes a particular liking to handsome butler John, himself engaged to the cook Christine. They soon get into a series of dangerous mind games as things quickly spiral out of control. Originally written in 1888, the play caused a scandal when first produced and has been hugely popular ever since. This sensual adaptation emphasises Strindberg's viscerally honest portrait of the class system and human sexuality. Amidst the midsummer frolics, the boundaries of status start to blur and the battle of the sexes intensifies. Who truly has the upper hand and how far will people go in the ultimate power struggle?

Synopsis: | The 1950s is currently the place to be seen as far as a lot of contemporary TV drama is concerned, and it certainly suits this revision of a classic play as elegantly as the central characters A-line dress. The post-war period setting gives an added relevance to the changes in class consciousness at the heart of the story, and makes a plausible battleground for the plays conflict between sexual passion and social position. - http://www.britishtheatreguide.info/reviews/miss-julie-korova-arts-c-9552

Synopsis: | 'Miss Julie's her usual self tonight... a lunatic she is!' Gossip and rumour spiral around aristocrat Miss Julie. Particularly regarding her attitude towards, and treatment of, men. Now she has spent a wild Midsummer Night's Eve waltzing with her servants in a barn, and paying particular attention to her father's handsome valet, Jean. Enflamed by passion and careless of her reputation, Miss Julie follows Jean home to the court kitchen and demands he return to the party to dance with her again. But how powerful is Miss Julie's charged command when, despite her high birth, she is a woman and he is a man? Written in 1888 Strindberg's masterful exploration of sex, class and power asks who in the battle of the sexes is really the servant, and who the master.

Synopsis: | We love watching plays about couples tearing each other to pieces: George and Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Elyot and Amanda in Private Lives, Jean and Julie in Miss Julie. The difference, though, is that Julie is still in her teens. She is rich because her father is rich. Jean is not rich - he works for the family, in a lowly way - but he would quite like to be. They have this much in common: they would both like to rule their own lives, they both think they can get that from each other, and they both think sex is the way to do it. August Strindberg's masterpiece has been hovering in the wings at Belvoir for a while now, waiting for the right people: Leticia Cáceres and Brendan Cowell both know how to combine tender and brutal to devastating effect. Simon Stone joins them with a rewrite of the play in the fashion of his The Wild Duck. This is a red-blooded new Miss Julie about men and power, about extreme privilege, about freedom and about how cruel we can be to each other in the interests of self-preservation.

Synopsis: | August Strindberg's Chekhovian comedy, Playing With Fire (Leka med elden, 1893), in a translation by Ulrika Brand that has been newly adapted by Obie-winner Leslie Lee, Executive Director of Negro Ensemble Company, will be presented with an all-black cast as the inaugural production of August Strindberg Repertory Theatre. The play, one of Strindberg's rare comedies, was written in 1893 after the playwright found himself involved in a love triangle within a love triangle within a love triangle. Leslie Lee has transformed its setting from a Swedish summer house in 1893 to a summer cottage of the black social elite in Oak Ridge, a neighborhood of Martha's Vineyard, in 1926. That is is around the time Oak Bluffs beach first became a mecca for the black upper crust from around the country.
