Synopsis: | BIRDS was presented in 414 BC. In the previous year, Athens captured an island city, Melia, after a long siege. The Athenians put all the men of military age to death and sold the women and children into slavery. Later that year, the Athenians decided to launch an expedition to Sicily after a vigorous debate. The debate ended with those who opposed the expedition becoming afraid to speak out for fear of being called unpatriotic. The outcome of the expedition in Sicily was still in doubt when Aristophanes wrote BIRDS. It had ended in disaster before he wrote his next extant play, LYSISTRATA.

In "Birds" Aristophanes turns from the pointed political satire characteristic of earlier plays to a fantasy that soars literally into the air in search of a carefree world. Here the enterprising protagonists create a utopian counter-Athens, called Cloudcuckooland, ruled by birds.

Synopsis: | In Aristophanes' 424 B.C. political satire, Demos, who personifies the Athenian public, has come under the spell of his demagogic slave, himself a personification of the playwright's own arch enemy, the politician Cleon. Two other slaves, Nicias and Demosthenes, themselves symbols of the democratic city state, decide to install a vagabond sausage seller off the streets in Cleon's place. They flatter Demos and turn him against Cleon and tell him that the oracles promise a new golden age for Athens. Beneath the satiric surface and the sexual and scatological imagery, Knights is also a more serious attempt to portray what Aristophanes views as the gullible, wrongly if eternally optimistic Athenian people and their need for a moral regeneration.

"What if they stopped a war because nobody came?" The first make-love-not-war play ever written, Lysistrata is a bawdy comedy about the War Between the Sexes set against the tragedy of a civil war. Ball and Chemers have created a new version of the play that brings out the erotic playfulness of the original while expanding on Aristophanes' unsparing dissection of militarism.

Synopsis: | Updated to the recent Balkan Wars, Lysistrata is a play about war and the battle of the sexes. The women of Athens, who are incensed by a long drawn out regional war, join the women of other city-states to bring all conflict to an end. They resolve to refuse to have any sexual relationship with their men until peace has been declared. Soon the effects of this strategy on both sexes become painfully apparent. In spite of attempts by the less strong-willed females to renege on their agreement, women turn out to be the stronger sex.

Synopsis: | This fresh, fast-paced comedy, inspired by the Aristophanes play, follows Lysistrata, an Athenian housewife, who calls for the women of Greece to help end the Peloponnesian War. She proposes a radical plan: all Greek women must refuse to engage in love making until the men see reason, lay down their arms and come home to lay down with their wives in peace. The women agree to make the sacrifice and all hell breaks loose as men wander the country in an agony of unsatisfied lust. Will Lysistrata and her crew accomplish what the politicians could not?

Synopsis: | This is a world-premiere adaptation of Lysistrata by the renowned puppet artist, writer, and director Theodora Skipitares. It which mixes Aristophanes' ancient comic tale about a group of Greek women who withhold sex from their husbands and lovers with video and newsreel footage of actual modern-day international sex strikes. Skipitares applies a variety of theatrical and multimedia twists to the 2500-year-old tale of Lysistrata and her fellow Greek women's ploy to convince the men of ancient Greece to find a peaceful end to war by withholding sexual privileges: from various forms of puppetry to music, choreography, burlesque, a Greek chorus attired in masks and costumes inspired by the ancient Roman Circus andby way of contrast between the fanciful and the seriousnewsreel and video of several sex strikes that have taken place in recent years around the globe, including "The Strike of the Crossed-Legs" conducted by the girlfriends of gang lords in Colombia, a strike in Kenya in the wake of a deadly, corrupt election, and an ongoing naked protest by farmers in Mexico City in retaliation for government appropriation of land.

Writing at the time of political and social crisis in Athens Aristophanes was an eloquent yet bawdy challenger to the demagogue and the sophist. The Achanians is a plea for peace set against the background of the long war with Sparta. In Lysistrata a band of women tap into the awesome power of sex in order to end a war. The darker comedy of The Clouds satirizes Athenian philosophers, Socrates in particular, and reflects the uncertainties of a generation in which all traditional religious and ethical beliefs were being challenged.

This is legendary feminist Germaine Greer's take on the great classical sex comedy ...Set in a bath-house steam-room in ancient Greece, the ancient world is gripped by a long and futile war. The women of Athens decide they can take no more and - in secret - they meet with up with the enemy women of Sparta. The women form a pact and the battle moves into the bedroom where it's No Peace,No Love. How will the valiant men of Athens stand up to such a contemptible ultimatum? Ancient fun with a modern twist

Synopsis: | Lysistrata: a Woman's Translation is the only modern adaptation of aristophanes' classic comedy written entirely in rhyme. Lysistrata, an athenian woman fed up with war, rallies together the women of Greece to seize the Treasury, stage a sex strike, and force the men of each warring faction to come home and sign a truce. This makes for a fast-paced and bawdy affair, including the pompous Magistrate's antics of male domination, and the celibacy-sworn Myrrhine's relentless teasing of her sex-starved, phallus-laden husband. Meanwhile, the Chorus of Old Men and Chorus of Old Women square off in a hilarious battle of wits and guts, ultimately resulting in a reunion of genders, ages, and political positions.

Hilarious version of Aristophanes' Greek classic. Praxagora, the leader of the women of Athens, plots to take over the government which is run by men and replace it with a new order run by women. Praxagora has the women of Athens dress up as men and vote in congress to turn over the reins of leadership to the women. When this measure is passed, the women unanimously vote Praxagora in as the Chief Executrix. Praxagora and the women then proceed to turn the Greek world topsy turvy legislating free love, male female role reversal and a communistic utopia that brings on the unlikely proceedings to a funny festive conclusion.
