Original Playwright - Shakespeare

Synopsis:

The press release describes this piece as "the spine-tingling, bone-chilling, blood-soaked thriller that makes Titus Andronicus look like a trip to Disney World." It further offers this "explanation" for the play's genesis: "In the latter half of the year 1601, William Shakespeare brought his new work Twelfth Night to his contemporary Ben Jonson. After reading the piece, Jonson was purported to say 'It's not bad, William, but about the zombies&' As William had a certain affinity for zombies (his father was a butcher), he quickly remained the piece 'Twelfth Night of the Living Dead' and mentioned the change to some locals. These locals could not remember the latter half of the totle and the play was thus coined 'Twelfth Night, or, What You Will'. We are proud to present the play as Shakespeare intended it."

Synopsis:

Written around 1600 and set in two contrasting communities; city and forest. Rosalind and Celia have been banished from Court. In fear of their lives, they disguise themselves and seek sanctuary in the Forest of Arden. Amongst the magical and ancient boughs, Rosalind discovers her exiled father, uncovers various truths about herself and others...and falls helplessly in love. But in this earthly paradise nothing is quite what it seems: men do not always act like men, and women can be anything at all...Uplifting, awe-inspiring and immense fun, Shakespeare's wondrous comedy is a joyous celebration of the liberating power of love and the redeeming spirit of nature.

In the tradition of such subversive love stories as Bonnie & Clyde and Sid and Nancy, Ben is an irreverent punk rock telling of Shakespeares timeless story of the ill-fated lovers, Romeo & Juliet. Told through the perspective of the often over-looked and under appreciated character of Benvolio, Ben takes us through the events of R & J from a barflys point of view. Adapted and chopped down to 90 minutes, this bawdy take on the Bard features live music, raunchy laughs, bar room brawls, and a touching story of how beauty and love can be found in even the ugliest of places

Synopsis:

William Shakespeare tinkered with the age-old legend of the melancholy Danish prince to produce his Hamlet. Now Ken Gass reworks the story, shifting the focus from the mad prince to the relationship between his mother Gertrude and his new step-father, his uncle Claudius, now the king. In examining the seesaw struggle between the private morality and political survival the playwright reinvents old characters, creates new ones and fashions an entirely new work, a murky comedy of political intrigue.

Synopsis:

Twenty years after his two sons disappeared, King Cymbeline's only daughter Imogen plans to marry against his wishes. Enraged, Cymbeline banishes her childhood sweetheart Posthumus from court. He flees to Italy and makes a wager he'll soon regret. Cymbeline's new queen plots with her ghastly son Cloten. Emperor Caesar is on the war-path. And poor Joan (who's just got back from the Costa de Sol) hasn't got a clue what's going on! Kneehigh turn their unique storytelling style to one of Shakespeare's least performed plays. In a script packed with heart-stopping poetry and characteristic charm, their irreverent adaptation plays fast and loose with the Bard. The result is a wild, giddy and elemental adventure that swings from tragedy to comedy and back again. Never has confusion been such fun!

Synopsis:

Forests is a new Shakespearean odyssey imagined by one of Europe's most prominent theatre directors, Calixto Bieito, whose passionate and radical interpretations of classics have stimulated controversy and earned him critical acclaim. Composed from original verse from Shakespeare's woodland and heath scenes, the play takes audiences from As You Like It's forest of Arden through the moving trees of Macbeth's Birnam Wood, ending in the bare wilderness of King Lear's cliffs of Dover: a vivid theatrical journey from the calmness of paradise to the uncertainties of purgatory and finally into the flames of hell.

Original Playwright - Shakespeare. Hamlet Clown Prince swept the boards at the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards, Indias most prestigious theatre prize, winning best play, best director, Rajat Kapoor and best actor Atul Kumar

Synopsis:

Shakespeare's best known play is brought vividly to life as a bunch of clowns attempt to put on their own production. As they try to understand it they make a mess of the work, sometimes misinterpreting the text, sometimes making a mess of the order of things as if the pages of the script got mixed up, sometimes confusing their own lives with their fictional characters. But through it all they are simply looking for the essence of Hamlet and trying to find a context for our own times.

Embodied here as a drama of what transpires in two worlds-an outer one of external events and an inner one of the mind-the action of the play centers on the second area, and the remarkably complex, exciting dialogue taking place within Hamlet's fertile brain. The play then happens through Hamlet's eyes and inside his mind, with subtle flashbacks and transpositions to clarify and interpret his present actions. The result is a theatrically rich and emotionally vivid experience, which illuminates and enhances the greatness of the play, while finding new levels of meaning and pertinence within it.

Into the Hazard [Henry 5] is a raw and riveting new adaptation of Shakespeare's politically charged, battle-filled history saga. Peppered with mock media footage, from Fox News to reality TV, this modern minimalist production exposes how television shapes our perceptions of war and heroism. This just in: The fight for the French throne rages on as a young and underestimated English king rises to iconic status amidst threats to national security and a military assault designed to divert attention from issues at home. Six actors portray over 20 different characters, on stage & screen, transporting the play's scenes from the royal court to a series of backroom negotiations and private deals. Into the Hazard [Henry 5] propels the Bard's 1599 epic into the media-obsessed world of 2009.

focuses on the fundemental question: what are you supposed to do with old folk. Jack Lear is a tetchy old trawlerman bitter at never having been blessed with male offspring. Instead he has brought up his children Morgana, Freda and Victoria to be men-daughters, handy with a filleting knife and unafraid to speak their minds. Now its up to them to decide who takes in the old salt and his posse of drunken friends. Benison trims his source as efficiently as gutting a haddock, discarding the subplot and empha¬sising the sexual competition of the two elder sis¬ters for the attention of Edmund, a weasily solici¬tor with powers of attorney over the old mans pos¬sessions.

Juliet and her Romeo

A story of a flourishing love affair in one generation, crushed by the financial and political concerns of another. What family has not wrestled with the question of how we care for our parents as they become older and frailer? Who will love them? Who will support them? Who will pay for their care? And with that care, what controls should we apply? If we have taken power of attorney, what about the freedom to fall in love, to give gifts, to marry unwisely?

Synopsis:

Driven by love, jealousy and betrayal, Lear is forced into a savage world of chaos and ruin by the very people closest to the Monarchs' heart - her Daughters. In a world turned upside down Lear is thrust into isolation and must fight to cling on to her own identity, throne and kingdom. Phil Willmott's vibrant new production of Shakespeare's masterpiece, KING LEAR, puts a mother at the heart of the action supposing that it is a queen who, weary of public office, divides the kingdom amongst her daughters. But the old woman finds it impossible to retire gracefully and as her mental faculties begin to fail she's cast out by her eldest children, as their sister prepares to lead a French invasion in retaliation. Meanwhile the Duke of Gloucester's equally ruthless son plots to steal his brothers inheritance and the younger generations align in a savage plot to mercilessly destroy their parents. But will they succeed? An epic double family drama about mothers and daughters, fathers and sons.

This haunting production begins on the battleground with the defining fight between MacBeth and MacDuff. Onstage throughout the entire play, MacBeth observes the events that have led him to the culminating battle. MacBeth: A Walking Shadow offers a powerful psychological study of his actions, and blends the supernatural elements into the fabric of reality. The witches are re-imagined as apparitions that emanate from people MacBeth is around at that moment. Taking its title from one of the play's most memorable soliloquies , 'Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player / That struts and frets his hour upon the stage / And then is heard no more', MacBeth: A Walking Shadow captures the rush of one's life and the fleeting decisions one makes. It ultimately asks the very human question, How did I wind up here?

Original Playwright - Shakespeare, adapted by Tom Morris and Handspring Puppet Company

Synopsis:

n a midsummer's night Hermia and her lover Lysander flee from Athens and Demetrius - the man Hermia's father favours as a son-in-law. Demetrius follows, pursued by Helena who loves him in spite of being spurned in favour of Hermia. On the same night Bottom and his friends leave Athens to find somewhere quiet to rehearse their play which is to be performed at the wedding feast of Duke Theseus. Drawn into the woods they enter a world of magic, mystery and wonder. Tom Morris and Handspring Puppet Company join forces once again to realise one of Shakespeare's most popular and fantastical plays, in their first collaboration since the hugely successful War Horse. A shape-shifting Puck is conjured from a selection of workman's tools, an eight-foot-tall Titania presides over a troupe of malevolent fairies and a giant, controlling Oberon manipulates his fairy queen and meddles in the confusion of the squabbling lovers. This is a delightful production, a riotous display of irreverent comedy in which anything can come to life and be transformed.

Synopsis:

A fairy queen and king argue ruthlessly and the world turns upside down - and Puck - the fairy devil with a cheeky glimmer in his eye - doesnt help. The mortal Kings and Queens play the parent card and deny their daughters the boyfriends of their choice. And Puck really doesnt help. Bottom the Weaver is to perform in a play at the palace and play all the parts himself. Hes not a very good actor so that should be a laugh. Puck really, really doesnt help. In fact, thanks to Puck, these young lovers give each other serious grief and the glamorous fairy queen falls in love with a donkey! Did you ever?! Really, grown-ups in love make such fools of themselves! With songs, puppets and knockabout humour Shakespeares story is faithfully adapted for a young audience losing none if its poetry, magic and beauty and, amazingly, is performed by just four actors. Synopsis:

Could Shakespeare's best-known comedy be a Jewish religious lampoon written by a woman? That's the basis for Midsummer Night's Dream: A Comic Jewish Satire. The Dark Lady Players will be the first company in the world to put on a Shakespearean production using the Amelia Bassano Theory, which is based primarily on a recent academic discovery by John Hudson that Shakespeare's plays contain a Jewish religious allegory. The theory reveals they were written by Amelia Bassano Lanyer, who has never before been considered as a potential Authorship candidate. A black Jewish woman, educated by a countess from the age of seven, for at least a decade this 'Dark Lady of the Sonnets' was mistress to the man in charge of the English Theater. She was the first woman in England to publish a book of poetry (in 1611), which included a long feminist epic poem criticizing the Gospels. Midsummer Night's Dream: A Comic Jewish Satire unwraps the play to its deepest allegorical level, revealing its nature as a Jewish satire against Christian idolatry. The allegory takes the form of a dramatization of the Jewish-Roman war (66-70 BC), in which Oberon (Yahweh) was fighting against Titania (Titus Caesar). The latter has stolen away the true Jewish messiah (the Little Indian/Judean boy), whose mother was a Virgin/votaress, and crowned him with thorny flowers. He was then turned into a Changeling, namely Jesus, who is allegorically represented on stage as Bottom/Pyramus and crucified in a series of actions that the playwright has taken straight from the Gospels.

Osborne's play, which was written in 1972, rewrites Shakespeare's Coriolanus in a modern political and military setting. The Roman intrigues and bloodshed of the original are transposed to a contemporary world in which the old guard patricians continue to manoeuvre against the new force of the 'people's politicians' and the ever-present mob. Osborne also makes more explicit the homoerotic subtext of the Coriolanus - Aufidius relationship. The 50 roles in Osborne's script are played by twelve actors in the Primavera rehearsed reading.

Synopsis:

this engrossing Arabic adaptation of Richard III, which comes all the way from Kuwait, and isjampacked with multimedia interventions and theatrical display that can be both exhilarating and distracting. Translated into what I instantly recognised as a mix of classical Arabic and more modern colloquial forms, SulaymanAl-Bassam's adaptation makes evil Richard of Gloucester the aspirant king of a Middle Eastern peninsula. Backed by foreign interests, in the form of a French Buckingham, he falls out with them once he has grasped control of the crown. Eventually, his tyrannical behaviour leaves him open to an external invasion backed by dissident internal forces.

His interpretation is meant to contrast the marvel of love with the fragility of life, the shock of the moment of total loss, and what he calls a "schizophrenia of the world." To do that, he must distill the beautiful sensuality and emotion of love into a magic moment. "It's like the magic moment when somebody shoots you," he says. "There is no emotion like that moment." D'Ambrosi will compress the famous play radically because he thinks that theater is evolving into fast pictures. He says, "When somebody shoots you in war, life goes away in one second. That's the fragility of life. In a hundred years, people won't sit in the theater for an hour or two. The play will be like a flash in a store mirror. Momentary." He aims to make the full theatrical experience momentary. This Romeo and Juliet will have a cast of four: two lovers and two supporting actors. The action is primarily physical but where there is dialogue, it will be in English. To say more would be to give away this radical, Artaudian, innovative production's dramatic surprises.

Synopsis:

Four young prep school students, tired of going through the usual drill of conjugating Latin and other tedious school routines, decide to vary their very governed lives. After school, one breaks out a copy of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juiliet and they all take turns reading the play aloud. The Bard's words and the story itself are thrilling to the boys and they become swept away, enmeshed in the emotion so much so that they break school rules in order to continue their readings. The rigidity of their lives begins to parallel the lives of the characters in the play: roles in the family, roles in society and the roles played by men and women soon seem to make all the sense in the world, and then, suddenly, they seem to make no sense at all. Although they had been taking turns playing all the parts, two eventually emerge playing Romeo and Juliet exclusively, bringing a whole new dimension to the proceedings. Perceptions and understanding are turned upside down as the fun of play acting turns serious and th

A powerful examination of the effects of extreme avarice, the misuse of wealth, influence and racial stereotyping, which leads to a culture of abuse - created by the dominant few - of those deemed to be outsiders. Poetic Justice has taken Shakespeare's work to devise a play which cuts to the chase in the wheeling, dealing money world. Here SHYLOCK & ANTONIO, two major players, bitter rivals battling for supremacy, in a place where money equals power and the law; the spoils to the victor. . .to the loser, defeat and destruction. Whether 16th or 21st century, for the greedy bankers, brokers and usurers, race and creed are merely tools in their battle - there is only one certainty: The winner takes it all.

Original Playwright - Shakespeare. Music, Lyrics and Adaptation by Oliver Mawdsley

Synopsis:

Feste returns to Illyria to seek reemployment with the Lady Olivia, but when he is openly humiliated by her chief steward Malvolio, he is filled with rage and plunges into a revenge fantasy that encompasses reality. Feste's anger-fuelled tempest wrecks the ship carrying twins Viola and Sebastian, and while both are saved, they each believe the other to be dead. Without her brother's legal protection, Viola decides to make her own way in the world by disguising herself as the serving boy Cesario, and when she finds employment with the Duke Orsino she enters a complicated web of love and madness. Adapted from William Shakespeares Twelfth Night, and featuring a beautiful, soaring score by Oliver Mawdsley, What You Will offers a new perspective on an old classic.
